Were Christianity's focus on elite monogamy and priestly/nun celibacy(partially applicable) actually beneficial to Europe?
I've seen claims of the opposite, ie that it was beneficial, but I don't see how that is possible true.
Putting your most intelligent and moral people out of the genepool or just out of direct raising of the future generations doesn't strike me as beneficial.
Outlawing polygamy which did happen regardless at elite levels seem to me to only cause more adultery and disfunctional relationship that accepting some levels of bigamy would have done(see what happened in France with their mistress system)
Thoughts?
