Fake news. Old St. Nick was red from the start, per his namesake, even if he lost the bishop getup. He's also based on Father Christmas, who has a little more variation in color and can be found in blue, but even he is traditionally red.

That's not to say there's anything wrong with a blue Santa, of course. Some of my best friends are blue.
