Guys, please I seriously need some critique and advice.
I know I'm still /beg/ tier trash but I genuinely am not sure how to move forward.
I just use a kind of soft textured pencil type of brush to make my sketch, I'm really just focusing on boundaries, which is a struggle for me around the face because the only actual distinct edges worthy of a hard line are the nostrils, eye folds, and lips, but I like to add lines were there tends to be a sort of steepness so bridge of the nose, the brow, lips, cheeks.
But I'm trying to elevate my sketch, my orginal sketch was in the middle. I redrew and resized some parts I didn't like, and then I tried two methods.
On the left I used a charcoal crush and just blended it with a generic blending stump brush, but I didn't press very hard so I never got any blacks.
The second one I used a hard brush at black and lowered the opacity so that it would naturally get darker from overlap. But this was so tedious and time consuming I gave up.
>>
>>7876294
Paint the entire body grey and add shadows and highlights as needed.
Right now your sketch makes little sense thus looks odd, the entire chest is as light as the brightest part of the drawing. Would it make sense that your chest was as bright as the sparkle in your eye (white)? That would only happen under very extreme conditions of light
>>
>>7876498
Wait so you advice to me is just make it grey?
That's the problem you see in my drawing?

Add the highlights, (some lighter grey or white) and be amazed. Where do you put it ? You can either take a reference similar to your image or use one of those 3d dummies and try to imitate the light you are going for
There's a reason why people draw on brown or grey paper, a few touches of black and white complete the sketch quite easily

Cute.
How do you get them to blend like that? I started using some I don't remember buying but it's hard to get soft edges like that. Though I think the new ones I bought will help a bit with that when they get here.
>>
>>7877843
Seconding this anon's question >>7877877 about blending because the gouache-like effect you got going on there is quite nice. I tried the medium-tip POSCA markers a while ago and felt like I was throwing shit at a wall.
>>
>>7877877
There's no blending you just need the proper colors. In fact you can literally see there which colors he used for ever part.
>>
>>7880439
Some of the edges look pretty soft. Acrylic markers do blend somewhat, but not easily.

An experiment in ink and aquarelle.
I picked an easy subject so I could focus on the medium. No the actors don't quite look like themselves, that wasn't the focus here. Waah normie can't recognize celebrity. I don't care. You get manga face Crockett.
So what did I learn, what are the takeaways?

>Ink and water color indeed work nicely together. I think I'm starting to prefer this over using pencil or ink hatching for the lighter tones.

>Working in a bigger size always makes things exponentially easier in trad. Like, I know this, but I still keep making tiny drawings and they end up looking shit. I should go bold and big more often. Maybe even this (A3) is still on the small side. My previous attempt, which you will never see, was a disaster area because my composition was too ambitious and I made it way too tiny. Simplify compositions, go bigger. Lesson learned.

>Dry brush can create interesting effects. I'll have to experiment with that more.

>Guns are hard to draw... better refs might help. Should also pay more attention to hands I think. Doesn't matter that much if you look from far away, but, you know

>Mirroring gives me a weird feeling, like I've fucked up even worse than I thought. But it goes away as I stare at it longer. Well it's not like I can do much about proportions at this point. You might call it a downside of trad, but I kind of like the fact I'm forced to just do the thing, commit to it, call it done and move on. These constraints are good for weaning one off turd-polishing habits. If anything I've been too easy on myself babying myself with acrylics. They're too forgiving. My digital-moded brain still keeps fighting me. I just gotta remind myself the name of that feeling is COWARDICE.

when you color, how do you decide where to stop the coloring in relation to the lineart?
picrel. should I color up to the lines? not touch the lines? slightly touch them? stay coherent (always more or less the same length inside of the lineart)?
>>
>>7882495
It doesn't matter the line layer goes on top anyway
>>
>>7882499
yes but if the lineart has anything less than 100% opacity, then it's semi transparent like in my picture, and so you can see where the coloring ends through it
>>
>>7882501
>Low opacity Lineart
For what reason
>>
>>7882513
did you open the fucking image, anon? does it look low opacity to you? it's just not 100% ventablack. 90% is not 100% and you can see through it.
>>
>>7882516
why would you do lineart that isnt 100% opaque I can't think of any reason to do that ,it defeats the entire purpose of lineart
>>
>>7882495
You never want to leave empty space so you are going to colour it all anyway, it depends on what you want to have priority. For example, a blue shirt over skin. The blue shirt goes over the skin so you paint the blue all the way and over the line while the skin is only up to the line. Does that make sense?

I plan on painting this with watercolor, but for now all I've got is the lineart pass
>>7877877
>>7880422
Thanks! To be honest this spread was the first time I started using acrylic markers so I'm not super experienced in them but I can explain what I did. I use a paint brush to blend colors together and mixed them on a palette if I couldn't find a marker with the color I wanted. I clean off my brush in a cup of water to keep colors from getting muddy. My sketchbook is pretty small, so it'd be hard for me to get such thin lines without the brush

Oh. Could be. Havent done many of those. But could be...
May i see it?

Its also not about fixing: what i noticed is when i try new things related to art, it improves everything.
Example If i try and learn to draw a horse, my human figures improve, somehow
If i try and challange myself by drawing a car..even when i fail, other things improove. Ecc .
