I've been driving myself a bit crazy on this and I'm not sure where to turn, but I have a character who has long claws on their hands (4-5 inches, arboreal descendent) and I'm really happy with them save for one thing:

I don't know how they can make a fist.

I've tried to account for it as I go, but I never quite found a solution, so now I'm here to ask: How does artchan think it'd work? Do the fingertips have to dig into the palms to make a fist? Or is there another (similar) configuration that would work without shattering their hand?

(Picture's not mine, but it's about the same deal, think closer to Kangaroo claws)

If you had little knives at the ends of each of your fingers, why would you ever need to make a fist? That would be like having a sword and deciding to smack people with your scabbard instead.

Could your character hold something in their fist? Something cylindrical, maybe coke can-sized, perhaps with a smaller radius? Anything to fill the fist, really.

Hey guys! Thank you for the advice, I realized after the post that I slightly oversold the claw size (2.5-3.5 inches) but either way these are pretty good. Their hands have a pretty strong simian influence already (Lemur leaning) and I eventually settled with raising the hypothenor to meet the fingertip beneath the cuticle, where the claws rest on top of the wrist when curled in (Still a little worried about him stabbing his arteries open but I can fudge it, it's a good excuse to double down on giving him gnarly wrists)

As for why he'd punch, he's just meant to be a very physical character, fists flying and angry beatdowns n such, the claws are meant to be strong and striking but also meant to convey dexterity, evolutionarily acting like finger-mounted tweezers and self-defense in equal measure. (their race was more about kicking, really, like an ostrich)

Anyway! Sorry this thread was on the spergier side, but I take my character design anatomy semi-seriously, and I don't really have any places to get advice on this kind of thing, and this is probably the most honest place to look

Nope, he can't, because physics is a thing, but he could still do karate chops.

thats okay, better than a silly bait thread

people underestimate palm strikes. even visually it looks pretty cool because the whole body has this forward motion where i think somthing like boxing is more twist and turns

Hey everybody! Thanks again for the advice, so a little something I forgot to mention as to why this character is meant to punch and beat and all that is because they fit in the mold of a shounen protagonist, and an emotionally unstable one at that, so I want to give them the means to beat someone down properly. (Even though I think the palmstrikes would be a really good flavor to another member of his race (tl;dr, shadow monks))

Anyway! I've been trying to have my cake and eat it too, because I feel like I've given them a very unique anatomy (Meant to stand out even among other fantasy races within the same setting) and I've been wanting to preserve the overall profile while allowing him to execute direct punches (Which it turns out his knuckle alignment is actually super ideal for that) I know trying too hard to be super unique is its own problem, but I feel like I've just about threaded the needle with this.

You actually gave me the epiphany I've needed, because it made me realize that the principle stability of the fist could from the grip itself, rather than the digits being tucked into the palm, (Forgive my ignorance but I've been flying by the seat of my pants for like a decade now) anyway, it made me realize: If the skin on the upper palm is padded sufficiently, then a fist could maybe close around that without digging their claws directly into the wrist, and instead parking them on top of the thenar while the fingertips tuck in directly beneath. (It gives me an excuse to lean into giving his hand more gnarled simian features, so I'll take it, plus I /think/ the length of his fingers might naturally offset the extra heft in his palm, and should make sure his grip stays about the same)

Idk boys, how bad's he looking?
