How do i know I actually learnt and are not just a retard following reference religiously? Is there like a way to slowly peel off from references?

not them, and i know what you mean here, but you really can make up a new thing out of all the building blocks you’ve leaned, you just have to map out in some way how you’re gonna place ur figure and build it up. feels like you were saying a fully realized scene doesnt just suddenly spring from ur pencil normally like a fully rendered study of a pre-staged figure photograph, but you can kinda get close to this via imagination by just working in passes and building up to complexity >like general composition -> tighter comp -> rough block in -> refining/fixing block in -> lineart if you use it, etc..

You can use references in a more subtle way. Just sketch something and then look for references which are somewhat similar to what you sketched. Then you can look how to draw the muscles and fat or whatever you wanna draw.
Or you can just take a reference and turn the object in it to a new perspective.

'learning' just means memorizing some aspect of the reference. In fact drawing without a reference is just photo bashing in your head. In fact if you had photographic memory you wouldn't need to learn anything you would just trace it from imagination. All the convoluted construction bullshit is just a cope for people who can't visualize properly

Holy fuck you all agree on everything but have the constant need to end your frases with "but doing this thing means your a retard and should kill yourself".
Like everyone agrees you need to memorize poses, you need to imagine things, you should use construction but not rely on it completely, and the same for references. But there's this bizarre NEED to disagree on something or the other like it was a taboo to not argue over stupid shit constantly

Just take the time to try to draw from memory every day, observe what went wrong, and just keep drawing. You’ll get there eventually but it takes time. Kim Jung Gi studied references for years before being able to draw from imagination
