in times when the mainstream establishment has gone completely to shit, outsider art is actually a necessity.

I think so, yeah. though I also think outsider art is a nigh-dead art form in today's age, due to how easy it is to share and receive information/content

Outsider art, in terms of artists not participating in artistic circles, is a category mostly occupied by the dead. It's main function is not to get recognition, and recognition for the artists' artistic abilities are evaluated posthumously. To me, it's mostly either performed by people who are content with using art as meditation, or it's for people who fear rejection. If you're the first type, have at it. If you're the second type, you're essentially gambling on whether people will recognize your genius after you're dead or not. If they like it, great, you're awesome and fantastic, oh how people should have known when you were alive, etc. If not, who cares? You're dead. You've lost nothing.
The only way explore pure form of expression is to be true to yourself. If that's staying home and draw, then do it.
Arguably, it's a bit like a "If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" type of thing. If you don't have anyone to share your artistic expression with, did you ever make any real art?
