>purple and brown are a good combination according to color theory.
Is it proof that it's nonsense?

Brown (which is basically just a dark orange) and purple are about 90 degrees separate on the color wheel, which makes them alone a bit of an unconventional combination. Which is probably why a few of your examples use a cyan to balance them out.
Is it nonsense? I tend to think the basis of the color wheel is a bit of a pseudoscience, but it consistently works which is why it's used. No idea where your brown + purple thing comes from but to me the tricolor schemes with purple + brown + cyan look better and the color theory supports that.

purple is an underrated color. It goes with almost everything. Doesn't matter the skin colour.
