I figure the invincibility is the main draw of that LW, isn't it? I haven't used it often myself, but on-demand invincibility is pretty valuable. and Kasen's LW isn't very appealing to me, since the delay is really long and on many tracks you can expect any number of the targets to dodge it unless you hold it specifically for a flat part of the track

well you know, she kinda does it herself... though I am quite jealous of everyone else behind me, because it's impossible for me to see up her skirt while I'm controlling her

well, there are two parts to this answer: the first part of the answer is that I've spent a lot of time considering her strengths and weaknesses.

considering that she has the highest top speed in the game, obviously the best way to make use of that Speed is to make sure that you're at your maximum as long as possible. so when on the ground, I am almost always on Kasen. with her high Speed and high Drift Slip (a hidden stat you will only find on the wiki; basically it makes her slide a lot when drifting, so that she sucks at turning but is good at conserving momentum), she is one of those characters who can make great use of breakdrifting, so I do it constantly, after almost every ring, every switchboost, and every change in direction, keeping me going moderately fast even on parts of the track with few rings. she has above-average Air as well, so she doesn't lose much speed if she ends up catching a little air-time, unlike Suika. her high mass is decent at bullying other racers, which is a small but notable advantage too

however, her weaknesses are also really large: her Boost is by far the lowest in the game, her turning is really below average, and her LW is thoroughly mediocre (from my experience, anyway). the dogshit acceleration means that getting hit at the wrong time, especially in the air, can mean her doom, and plus it kinda counteracts her high Speed, meaning that characters with high Boost can still outpace her on sections with lots of boost rings. her poor turning isn't a HUGE problem on most tracks, since most of them have simple curves that literally any character can do easily, but it does make her particularly cumbersome when you really NEED to turn, like on Embers of Blazing Hell, Misty Lake, and any number of aerial shortcuts you will find in the game. that last part is particularly important, because aerial shortcuts are pretty much the only way to gain a lot of distance very quickly, and a character with bad acceleration and bad turning just can't take very many of them. so, because these weaknesses can't be ignored, my biggest consideration is: who do I partner Kasen with to cover all of her weaknesses? thankfully the game has a nice selection of good partners with high Air and good handling, and recently I've been using Reimu, Sanae, and Suwako, who have a combination of stats that make it easy to navigate any part of the track, (I experimented with Reisen for her incredible LW, but her stats are so dogshit that I swapped her out). I just switch to my partner for the zig-zags and right before the air sections, I make sure to keep my cradles and fans on them for shortcuts, and it works most of the time. it IS kind of possible to use a Speedy character with Kasen, like Suika, Cirno, Clownpiece, etc, as that will make you very fast, but I've found the combo to be a little redundant considering Kasen is already plenty fast when she's in her element. though Cirno might be a decent bet, since her turning isn't terrible despite how slippery she is. I just don't like Cirno that much.

okay, that was the first part of the answer. the second part is shorter: I just practice a lot to the point that I can take 95% of each course as Kasen without issues. her turning is pretty poor, like I said, but characters like her can use their awkward drift tactically to reposition themselves. for instance, drifting left shifts your body to the right, so if an obstacle is ahead of you, you can sometimes drift INTO it in order to move your body away from it and ultimately sidestep it. weirdly enough, I think you can actually GAIN a tiny bit of momentum when doing this? I'm not sure. anyway, some hard turns can be taken cleanly if you start at early and at a wide angle, while others will require you to end your drift early before you reorient and start drifting again, and still others can only be done if you simply switch to your partner. learning the difference can only come through experience. and of course, I am very careful with my spell meter and my spellcard usage, trying my best to put myself in the best position to win on lap 3... though it doesn't always work

Huh, so Kasen is more of a grounded-type racer. That's good to know. Also I had no idea that AIR stat determines how fast you go in the air. (They should've named it AIRSPEED or something)

it's dependent on the characters' stats, yeah. at its essence, the only thing break drifting does is preserve the momentum you already have, you know? so characters with higher Boost and Speed will be going faster and therefore will have more momentum to preserve, meaning they benefit more than slower characters. and characters with high drift slip just lose less momentum when drifting, which is supposed to be a weakness (as it means you can't take tight drifts) but can become a strength when used with intent (typically when taking very wide drifts on gentle curves of the track). all Speedy characters have medium to high drift slip, so they all can do this, while Technical characters have low drift slip (and also low Speed) and therefore get less benefit from break drifting. btw, the huge speed boosts from Fans and Reveries can also be conserved if you start break drifting at the end.

yeah, sadly it's not very useful if your opponents know how to dodge it. Reimu's LW only hits three targets instead of four, but I think it is much better because of how consistent it is. in general, I typically give Kasen a partner with a better LW and only use that one.

characters with high Mass like Kasen will be stunned for only 90% as long when they are hit. it's a small difference, typically around a quarter of a second, so you should still endeavor to avoid as much damage as possible.

yup this is true. but you can take advantage of this to do the opposite: when you are about to fall into the void, you can drift AWAY from the track to put your body ON the track. this is helpful in some aerial sections when you need to quickly adjust your position to land on a platform.

update: I bravely fought my way into their finals, defeating the likes of EagleR and nabana (sorry guys), but the guys in the finals were utter monsters. they only play Speedy characters, they go faster than I could have ever dreamed of, and take every shortcut I know of and even the shortcuts I didn't know of. in the end, I got 7th place, out of 15. overall pretty fun, though those guys above me are really too crazy for me to even stand up to their feet...

but they did a raffle and I won 20 dollars! that almost covers the cost of my legitimate copy of the game

the last time we had a lull like this was during the 7th tournament. at the time, people were invited from the skydrift discord to fill out the roster. some of the missing regulars came back for tournaments after that, though. too bad we can't ask the people who aren't here why exactly it is that they aren't here

I'm sure a lot of it has to do with personal life stuff. But if they're burnt out of the game too that's understandable. You can only get so much enjoyment out of playing the same game over and over again, and even more so when support for it has been dead for ages. Sure, we've got Shinten in the mix now, but we mostly save that for special occasions, otherwise it'd wind up played out just like the base game.
And I think a big part of it is /jp/ as a whole dying more as of late. So many left after the hack, and the state of the board's moderation has soured things for many. Add the new autosage on top of that, and it's easy to see why things are more unappealing than ever.
Though it sounds kinda cheesy, it's nice to see we've still got a little group of usuals who still show up despite it all. For however long this still lasts, it's at least been a fun one, dont'cha think?

I'd mostly echo >>50680713 We were all pretty much on equal footing as far as skill goes and didn't focus on things like character skills or tightening our lines. We went with who we liked and hit that raceway hard, and whoever won usually did so with a hint of luck lol. There wasn't as much personal banter, and it even took a bit for us to get regular full lobbies. Looking back at the old threads in the archive, the overall feel was a lot more chaotic and wacky. There was more OC posted too.
...I actually got a bit sad looking at the names of regulars that we haven't seen in awhile. There were some good racists here, and some surprisingly good drawfags to boot. It's been nice racing against all the different Anons who've joined our sessions.

Also holy crap my art really looks different nowadays, just comparing the art I did for our first tourney vs this last.
