Fellas I just traded a 1963 Yugo M57 for a 1953 Romanian M44, pretty happy to finally have one. The bore, bolt, and receiver are all in pretty good shape, and I must say the trigger is crisper& the bolt is much smoother than my 1928 91/30. Anyhow - some would-be bubba sanded the absolute hell out of the stock for some ungodly reason.
For that reason I wanted to get this particular carbine for the purpose of *tastefully* sporterizing it. Years ago I saw a youtube video where a guy rechambered a beater Mosin in 45-70 and managed to redo the stock in such a way that maintained the original look as much as possible. As far as I remember the guy just replaced the barrel, slightly modified the bolt face, and beat out the magazine walls. I've always wanted to recreate that because I think it would be a fantastic hunting rifle for deer and hogs down here in GA where the woods are thick and the shots are close.
Anybody know where would be the best place to look for a suitable 45-70 barrel to kick off this project?

Looks to be a Russian refurb given the color of the bolt.

Well, anyone that makes barrel blanks. I know the guy you're talking about and he turned a 45-70 blank on a lathe to get the profile and thread pitch he needed to put it in the receiver. Funny, I also looked into doing something similar recently with a nugget receiver or one of those navy arms barreled actions on Sarco that already have 45-70 barrels in them. Instead I bought a husqvarna 45-70 moose gun from simpsonltd.

Has anyone here ever collected a rifle by different stock wood types? I read on the M.95s that a multitude of wood species (~17 iirc) were trialed and used on them including walnut, elm, maple, beech, birch, etc. I think that would make for a neat collection.

I bought this M91/59 (middle) because the finger grooves in the stock where thinner than a standard Mosin stock, and it reminded me of my Wz. 48 with the wood grain. Still don't really know what the differences are.

>>
>>
>>64810607
Yeah, I was concerned because they were showing them having cracks at the back of the stock on the page. Yet when I emailed them about a stock they were selling on gunbroker they said 'no, the ones on our site are in good shape'.
>>
>>64810677
I'd give it a spin, Egypt stocks are getting more scarce than the other variants it seems and those all have recoil lugs. Mine happens to be cut for a recoil lug for reasons unknown so I'm going belgian, I think it's specific to the Eagle receivers.

Wrong thread to ask if anybody has any info on the lining of M.82 Dutch NBC parkas? I understand it’s a three-layer system, just want to know if it’s activated charcoal, some kind of foam catchment that’ll hold tons of water, or some weird proprietary material that’ll give me instant ass-cancer as soon as I break into it with shears
Basically want to know if this thing is worth any actual field time if I sew on some pockets, or if it’s too narrow in its intended use against NBC
I would ask /gq/ but why would you ever ask them anything if you wanted a helpful answer
>>
>>64810700
Honestly I was hoping to get the stock so mine would sell a little better. I don't wanna take the chance on replacing a cracked stock..wih a cracked stock. I may just sell it as is. Mine is a crown receiver btw.

Unfortunately that seems to be about the going rate for common 91/30s these days. Due to the fact it’s a Tula and I don’t have a Tula 91/30, I’d probably buy it if I saw it in my LGS.

Not a gun but this is the best thread to post this. I got this as a turbo steal for 250 burgerbucks. There are maybe 6 or 7 others you can find being sold online ever, and very few were ever made. It is a Sabre, made around the turn of the 20th century. As a bit of a game before i spaghetti dump unannounced, can any of you tell me what is unusual about the grip and what potential reason they have done this for? I will give you a hint, it was done to make one extremely specific use case more effective.

Alright no one wanted to play, that's ok. Anyways, this has a backwards canted grip which I thought would be obvious from the orientation of the photo. If a grip is not straight, then it will generally curve inwards towards the pommel. Why did the Eyetalians do this one differently? Because when cavalry charges with the goal of attacking dismounted infantry, you hold your arm up with your palm facing outwards. It feels goofy but as you stab, it pulls the blade to your outside allowing your wrist to move with it, break rigidity, and for the tip to withdraw from the victim. Palm inwards and it can break your wrist or make you lose the sword. Anyways it is very odd and unusual but gripping it in 1st position really does lock it into a bizarrely comfortable position, it's just that the only thing this sword CAN do is act as a hand-lance in 1st position. Now you know.

Do any SKS owners here have experiences making the chinese 20 rounders work better? It can feed 20 rounds just fine but there is a weird friction that happens around 15+ rounds which makes it hard to load fully, I suspect the magazine is slightly too wide/bending under load and the rounds at the bottom are spreading horizontally.
I probably deserve it for buying one of these magazines anyway, I usually keep the original 10 rounder on anyway.

No it's alright man don't worry I wasn't actually expecting anyone to have an answer. There is ONE public forum thread and a few paragraphs in a book on these beyond their listings for sale. They are ludicrously rare and unknown. The turn of the century period has a lot of really cool sword designs all sort of converging.
The German 1888 (iirc) has my favorite hilt and grip, somewhere between an 1908/12 and an earlier one where you can still use your hand. Blade they used was a little anemic but slap a French 1854 or a British 1845 pattern or god help you, a Swedish 1893 with the 95cm broadsword blade and it'd be borderline perfect.
One went on auction late summer last year, I bid close to 2k on it, it went for over 3k. These are so fucking cool I really just want to handle one or get like a fucking softball as a mandrel and hammer steel around it to remake this guard because it fucks.

It’s a Russian captured rifle, the sight hood and cleaning rod are reproductions. The action & barrel are dot 1943. I don’t remember if the other parts have any identifying marks indicating where they came from, it’s in the back of my safe and I’m too lazy to dig it out tonight.
On a related note, was it really a good idea for the Russians to disassemble all these rifles and throw everything into bins, only to reassemble the guns as mix masters? What was the point of that when they could’ve just left them as-is?

1. communist countries created jobs by having people do useless work. just keep em busy.
2.lots of russian captured Germsn guns were stored shitty and moist, very often in the open.
thats why so many vopos, captured k98s etc. have a little surface pitting.
so they had to disassemble them to weed out really rusty parts.
force matching was a way to create more work again.
commie bullshit it was, mostly.
same for yugo mausers.

What do you wanna do with it? Assuming it works, you could sell it right now for 10x+ what you paid for it. If you wanna clean it up more even on the outside, #0000 steel wool is great at getting into weird parts. I use LSA with it and it gives everything a nice dark clear finish. It looks like it is in good shape overall but if you get annoyed by how inconsistent the finish is easy enough to do. Get a nice podcast, album, tv show, or just go outside in general for a few hours each evening if you want. Scratches towards the front wont polish out, dont go that hard, but especially getting in the recessed part on the side there above the trigger and then the front will really make all the lines crisp and strong. Ren Wax is a good protective but only if you don't handle it.
Those grips look too smooth to me but I'm not too up to date on C96 variations. Looks like it is walnut with some good flaming. Avoid tung oil, get some boiled linseed oil on it but it will take a LONG time to set properly. It won't be noticeable today or tomorrow or next year but if you keep this gun, a 2-3x coated BLO finish on walnut 30 years down the road is beautiful.
If you can get it disassembled or already see parts you want to clean more or even the wood grips, a once over with a soft bristled toothbrush, warm water, and dish soap is good. Works great for anywhere with finely machined textures at getting in there. If you dont mind polishing the transfer, brass brushes are a great soft cleaner for checkered parts as well but it will turn shit bronze until you brush it off. If you really really want to make the brass on the grip look nice, do about 70% water, 20% lemon juice, 10% dish soap in a mug, heat it in the microwave or somewhere else, and using q tips or a rag lightly polish the brass. You will get a beautiful rich old-gold to it.
>Sorry I know you meant more on the functionality part but I do a moderate amount of restoration work on really overlooked beat to shit stuff

Thanks for the advice! I bought it in condition pictured from an estate sale, alr put ~4hrs in w/ steel wool for original picture. All internals are there in condition, all I've done here is CLP them so far
The grip screw seems like stripped, or uses an hour glass like design, not sure which way. I will try your methods and update this thread soon!

Cool. I’ve always wondered how many Chinese SKS’ made in the 60s saw action in Vietnam.
Seeing your post made me check the serials on my 2 Chinese SKS’. Pic related is Factory 906 with a 1.7 million serial. The one in the photo that I used in my 1st reply is a factory 26 with a 4 digit serial and a “W” prefix, which according to research puts it at around 1960 I guess. Obviously went through a refurbishment at some point, but still retains a 1 piece gas tube.
The scope and mount were slapped on by the Chinese prior to import. It surprisingly holds zero.

Anyone know why a FN49 Egyptian trigger housing would just have a stuck trigger when put inside a Belgian 30-06 stock? There's not a single thing I can see that's rubbing against the stock. Hammer and safety move freely, trigger just won't.
>>
>>64854362
I know type 56 ID can be a bit tricky, but im not sure if you have a letter series sks. Dead giveaway is the spiker, factory 26 didnt do that until post 1964. Your rear sling swivel is at the bottom of the stock, which they switched to that in '66. I cant tell from the picture, but if you have a short barrel lug instead of long, they changed to that in '65. You still have a carrier lightening cut and 1 piece gas tube, so thats pre '67. If I had to bet, yours is from '66. What's confusing is your claim of a 4 digit serial with a prefix. The only thing I can think of is that its a letter series receiver with non-matching parts.

Yeah even if it is an early serial letter series it obviously isn’t all original. Clearly went through a rebuild. It didn’t even have a bayonet or cleaning rod when I got it, and I added them on, though that’s an old pic with no cleaning rod.

carcanos have
-poorshit finish
-scratchy triggers
-whole gun feels thin and cheap, a feeling which intensifies to nausea if handling a carcano after handling smth like a mauser or steyr
-sights have huge notches and are meant to be six o click sighted by the book, yeah thats improve accuracy
-you cant cook spaghetti with it, not even a bundle of like 7-8 noodles fit inside the bore
BUTT:
-im a comfy guy and the aenemic load is very easy to shoot.
-the aenemic load doesnt heat up the gun so fast, which helps with competitions/longer series.

>what is the best bang for your buck book out there on the Luger?
It depends on what you want out of a book on Lugers. Do you want a cursory overview of German Lugers? Do you want a detailed breakdown of changes to the Luger in German service? Do you want the entire development history and contract variations of every Luger ever made? Your answer will vary depending on what you're looking for since there are a million books on Lugers. But in my experience, here's what I found for books:
>cursory
The P.08 Luger by Luc Guillou
>detailed (German)
Any of Jan Still's Luger books
The Gortz & Sturgess set is going to be the best for the super in depth development history and contract variants.

It would be nice to know all the variants and maybe some basic production history. But I don't need to know on February 18th, 1901 Georg Luger had a massive case of the shits so design work was delayed until the next day and that taco tuesday was no longer approved for Luger factory workers.

You could try "The Luger Story" by John Walker which isn't as in depth as Gortz & Sturgess though slightly outdated.I personally haven't read it so I couldn't tell you for certain but online reviews say it is lacking in pictures.

Original Carcano clips are fine. The problem is that there are so many fake clips out there and the assholes marked them all SMI 39, which is the most common original clip to find and probably the best of the original clips out there.
The top clip here is one of the fakes, the bottom is original. flat top 3 is a fake, while a curved 3 is not. If you hold both in your hands they are easy to see which is original and which one isn't. You can feel how whimpy the fakes are, while the originals are very springy.

it never ceases to amaze me how 1930s stamped sheet metal is complete alien technology that is beyond the comprehension of modern machine shops. Asking for high quality repro milsurp accessories is like asking someone to build the pyramids.
>>
>>64875677
Ever since God's Chosen Uniparty shipped our manufacturing base overseas, simple shit like stampings at scale have essentially become lost technology. The only ones who know how to do it are either near retirement, retired, or dead.
Besides that, stampings typically have a very high start up cost since the stamps need to be custom made and the machines specifically tuned, so there would be no real profit to be made unless they were made in the millions. Maybe someone made a 3d printed version?
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>64877973
They made millions of them on large and expensive stamping machines that don't exist in America anymore. All machine shops know how to do nowadays is press a button on a cnc machine. Look into 3d printing.

It's a very complicated design requiring a lot of hand fitting. Just because modern manufacturing can make very complicated things doesn't mean that you can apply that to old designs. The Chinese actually did make C96 and Type-17 clones in the '80s but the import restrictions of the '90s put an end to that.

I’m wondering that as well. There’s a stipulation to the Chinese import ban that if a Chinese made gun sits in another country for like 10 years, it’s ok to import so I’m guessing that’s what happened? Maybe they spent a few decades in Albania like the Chinese SKSs that are making it in.

Not that anon, but related.
Hypothetically speaking anyway.
Asking here because there's no hand loading thread up and I don't wanna make one just for this question and I suspect there's a lot of crossover twixt the /msg/ and hand loading crowd anyway.
Let's say I can get my grubby mitts on a couple spam cans of steel core 54r. CHEAP. But I don't have a 54r firearm. I DO have a .308. I _really_ like the idea of having some steel core .308 ammo for reasons (in minecraft let's say muh dick). Would it be worth it to disassemble the 54r ammo and swage down the bullets to .308? Could you re use the powder? How the hell do you dispose of a bunch of corrosive primed brass? Is this over complicated and there's easier ways to get steel core (or steel core like effects) .308 ammo? Would it even be technically legal? in mine craft?
please note : "hypothetically" and "in mine craft" added for humorous reasons. I know the whole thing is probably kinda cringe, but it's my cringe and I own it.

I typically wouldnt buy something like this but I bought a 1953 hungarian m44 mosin nagant off a guy today.
It was 340 burgers and its in good shape aside from the sticky bolt. Rifle is fine.

There's probably one somewhere. Here's a Mauser 1893, which might be explainable as coming from the batch that the Persian Constitutionalist rebels purchased in 1905, except this rifle in the picture has the Spanish-pattern rear sight elevator manufactured only in Spain. So maybe this journeyed across North Africa and Mesopotamia.
