What are the real uses of derringer-type guns? I sincerely wonder, I am neither pro nor anti derringer. I have never even touched one. I just wonder if they have a use that ultra-compact guns could not fulfill.

I’m writing a /k/ related post apocalyptic story. (I’m way too embarrassed to ever share it so don’t ask)
In your opinion, what would’ve been a good year for the world to end? (So I can dial in the gear, tech, lingo and trends etc of that era)
I have a few dates picked out.
2013, 2019, or 2023?

None really. I bought one of those American Derringer model DA38 ones in .40S&W. It had that trigger pull from your nightmares where you're dragging it back with all your might and it just won't fucking fire. This wasn't because I wasn't pulling it hard enough, it's because quite often it just wouldn't fucking fire no matter how much "pressure" (more like tons of weight) you put on the trigger.
It ALSO would fail to set off the primer about a third of the time, just leaving a deep dent in it. My guess is that the internal hammer was so slow that while it could force a big dimple into the primer, it couldn't actually whack it hard enough to detonate it.
Oh, and just for funsies, when it did actually fire, it was so fucking painful that it made me develop an insanely bad flinch.
Honestly shitty guns.

What's the best way to release a newly developed 3D-printed gun so that it gains some attention and maybe a following?
It's nothing extra special or unique, just has some nice features (IMHO at least) that I have never seen on any other 3DPG in its general category. It also has a very low non-printed parts count for what it does (AR15 FCG plus three more gun parts plus two screws, and I'm working on eliminating the three currently-non-printed gun parts).
Do I just post it on Odysee and 3D2A and here?
Should I join up with one of the big collaborative groups like BLC or AWCY?
Do I need to pay guntube influencers for reviews?

Today? They're mostly fun toys. Back in the day they were an effective self-defense weapon, being much more reliable than other pocket options like a vest-pocket automatic, pepperbox, or tap-action pistol.
>>64877329
>so that it gains some attention and maybe a following?
>it's nothing extra special or unique
Pick one. If you want attention then your design needs to be different somehow. If your design isn't exceptional in some way then yeah, you're going to have to pay.

I irony is that unless that's some wierdo handoad it would actually be weaker than a .44. The thing with .45-70 is that all the factory loads are full of slow rifle powder. They make terrible power with a barrel that short. A 9mm would unironically be more powerful since it would have a couple inches of barrel length.

Formally correct is purple, which is specially made for small fasteners. That said purple is difficult to find so few people use it. Blue is the better choice than red, that's certain.
Though, as a tip: heat softens loctite, so if you have a small loctited screw that's stuck and you're worried about the head stripping before you can get it out, heat it up. A soldering iron works great. Get it hot and the loctite comes right off. Also keep in mind that loctite doesn't work on oily parts. Clean your screws before applying the loctite otherwise it may not work.
>>
>>
>>
>>64877694
Blue for 242 for stuff you plan to take off or adjust later. Red for stuff you don't. Too much red on some stuff can wind up surprisingly permanent, like I get it's in the name but I wasn't expecting the aluminum to give first.
>>
>>64877732
They're suitable for that, but the various .410 revolvers are even better. In fact, snake gun is one of the few things that those are good for.
>>64877778
The stronger grades of loctite are no joke. The bearing retaining types are strong enough to glue barrel liners in rifles.
>>
>>64877793
>.410 revolvers are even better.
no, those are fucking huge and you don't need five shots to kill a snake. The derringers are much better for this. just compare the weight and footprint of the two guns. I will forever maintain that guns like the judge are completely useless novelty pieces.

I work retail. Even though it's technically a fireable offense to concealed carry.
I kinda want to get a clipped ankle holstered derringer in case the store I work at ever gets shot up. Small enough to have almost no printing or discomfort, but still something I can hide around a corner with or tag an attacker with from up close or far away with before running.
Appendix carrying a standard concealable pistol seems annoying and uncomfortable with how much moving I have to do on a daily basis.
Either a basic derringer or on a more goofier note some kind of housekey shotgun with a single shot. akin to a fucking eoka from rust lmao.

I've found that the groups aren't that interested unless you're an established dev, and suspect most of the buzz about new designs is self generated. I'd post about it here, 3d2a, twitter/x, blc and fosscad matrix chats as everyone has migrated there from discord recently, and add tons of tags on odysee "guncad" specificly to hit the index. I'll make one and post pics if the parts aren't too expensive.

I have a stupid question Armscor won't answer. The PAK-OUT Long and Short are individually denied in Commiefornia, but what if I take the 18½ inch PAK-OUT Long barrel and mount the PAK-OUT Short trigger & grip to it, making it essentially a foldable Mossberg Shockwave?
Would that be feasible (the aft folding section seems similar)?

Bullets on-demand, no matter your situation, from a throwaway pocket gun that can't be turned against you.

>PAK-OUT Long and Short are individually denied in Commiefornia
The short version would be banned, but the Long version seems perfectly legal in California out of the box. SBS laws are
>less than 26" OAL
>less than 18" barrel
The Long version has 18.5" barrel and is 26" overall, so it should be good.

This is truly a stupid question but how do I drop the hammer on a surplus full auto AUG trigger pack? There's a thingy in front of the hammer that I assume is a trip for once it's in battery (not present on the semi-auto trigger pack) that keeps it from moving but I can't get that thingy to move and release the hammer no matter how hard or what direction I push on it.
I want the trigger springs because apparently they're like the Steyr "red springs" except these ones are free-to-me instead of $68+shipping.
>>
>>64877166
2023 is too easy. You'd just have COVID be as bad as the mainstream media said it was, with a death:case ratio of 1:9 (when "case" meant "someone in the hospital because of it), but with the new definition of "case", meaning anyone who tests positive on the PCR tests has a 1 in 9 chance of dying, and assuming that anyone who has been around someone who tested positive will inevitably test positive and thus have a 1 in 9 chance of dying later.
And most people still act like it was about that bad, so unless you really beat them over the head with "this is how bad it would be if it was as bad as you've been told" you wouldn't be doing sensible disease control any favors.
You wouldn't even have to mention the riots. But if those still happened, they'd just go from...what they were, to a consensus that this was the last chance of all time to get anything that was still in a store.

They're also like five fucking figures because legal tax stamp in CA and SOTs will charge for that privilege. Apologists will crow about this because
>you can still get NFA weapons in CA!
But it costs more than a used car and takes more friends in LE than a whole police convention for a 12 gauge with a barrel 4 inches shorter than minimum.
>>
>>64879474
>I'll make one and post pics if the parts aren't too expensive.
Thanks! Pretty cheap, just an AR FCG and some other stuff that most people have laying around. Plus either two or four M5 screws (could substitute other sizes if desired) depending on if rifle or pistol (need two more to hold the stock on).

>>
>>
>>64881946
I recommend lancer because they have a metal insert around the feed lips.
If you store a loaded PMAG long term you are supposed to use one of the plastic caps that depresses the top 2 rounds so that it takes tension off the feed lips and doesn't crack/bow them out. Not a problem if they are metal.
That said, if the question is purely aesthetic it is going to depend more on preference and what rifle you are using it with.
>>64881755
I might actually know the guy. Can you link to the article?
>>64882237
What FFL? They sound misinformed.
You can't have a folding stock on a semi-auto shotgun in CA, but on a pump it is fine so long as it meets barrel/OAL length minimums.
CA measures OAL in firing configuration, but by that metric the PAK-OUT Long isn't any shorter than say a Maverick 88 with a folding stock. Those are sold all the time.

Might be about him, although the report is very late. If that is the case he did post on /k/, he was actually a very advanced AK collector/clone builder. I don't know if he actually tried smuggling a part out or if they planted it, but it is what it is now. I strongly recommended that he not go on the trip in the first place.
In any case assuming this news story is about my friend he's taking it as well as he can and his family is checking in with him. State Department is aware and if he's lucky he might get exchanged sooner than the 4 year sentence (actually 3 now, he was arrested a year ago). If not, the situation is sub-optimal of course but not as dire as one might think. The Russian prison system is infamous but foreigners are kept in special prisons with better conditions. I've made inquiries to see if I can help him any but only run into dead ends myself.

I’m gonna be moving to San Francisco (unfortunately) and living there for the next few years. I’m out of state, so I know carrying is out of the question unless I go through the massive PITA that is the application process for an out-of-state permit (introduced in 2025 shockingly enough).
I understand that I can bring whatever guns I want with me into the state as long as they’re CA-compliant. Really the only one I’m planning on bringing is my Model 29 just for the Dirty Harry feel because I’m gonna be too busy to ever really shoot anyway.
But on those times where I do have time to shoot, where on earth do I go? Any anons have any recs?

Anyone know if the new PSA AXR line's pistol chassis will also accept the RXM fire control group or if the AXR will only fit in the RXM's chassis.
I already have an RXM that I love and I haven't been a huge fan of PSA's dagger line but I do like the idea of having a Glock Gen 3 that takes 320 mags. I just don't wanna buy another fcg. Especially if I can just buy another RXM and stick the better fcg in the AXR chassis.

I'm a little south of SF, so I usually go to Reed's Indoor Range in Santa Clara. It's $25/hour per person and open 10AM-8PM almost every day, so it's good for a quick in-and-out shooting experience. It has the usual indoor range rules (no rapid fire, etc.) but the range officers are typically pretty cool so long as you're not purposefully screwing around. They rent guns too, but they make you use their ammo and will charge you for that, so the listed rental prices are kind of a scam.
The Sunnyvale Rod and Gun club and Los Altos Rod and Gun club are also both nice, they charge by the day so they're a lot cheaper if you want to shoot for more than an hour. Lot more options for shooting as well (longer ranges and trap range). But unless you get a membership they're only open during certain days.

The US military is geared for force projection in a way that most countries aren't. USAF tends to have jurisdiction over strategic bombing and defense of domestic airspace, whereas when we go and fuck someone up from the air that tends to start from the deck of an aircraft carrier. The constrictions involved with launching planes off a carrier and landing them back on the deck make both the aircraft and training rather specialized compared to USAF who have the luxury of landing on larger ground based runways that don't move or potentially sink. The sheer challenge of doing that does generally demand more of USN pilots and their aircraft.
Of course that doesn't mean that the USAF isn't forward deployed in different places or that they just sit on their thumbs. For instance all the A10 CAS missions flown in Afghanistan/Iraq were USAF.
>>64888400
Might as well apply for a permit. It's a pain, but it is better to have than not have.
>Mod 29
Is fine. You can self register any number of firearms within 60 days of arrival.
https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/agweb/pdfs/firearms/forms/ab991frm.
What other firearms do you own? Sometimes it's possible to make a gun CA legal if it isn't originally. If you bring in off-roster handguns you can also sell them for a steep premium.
>Where to shoot.
There are several places depending where in the Bay you are. Reed's Indoor Range in Santa Clara, Sunnyvale Rod and Gun in Cupertino, Coyote Point is the closest up the SF Peninsula. Your best bet would be to either take a drive East to Dublin/Pleasanton or South to San Jose.
As far as gun stores the closest to SF would be City Arms in Pacifica (very scenic as well) but there are several around the region.
Also if you get an FFL 03 you can get a COE and mail order ammunition to your house. You can also buy C&R guns much easier without the 10 day wait. It pays for itself very quickly once you have both the C&R and COE.

Should I go for a normal m16a1 clone and try to slow down its RPM to like 600, or should I try building a 605 dissipator using a 16" m4 barrel so the carbine length gas system increases the RPM, and then get some things like a titanium bcg to increase the rpm even more to like 900+

My bad, I didn't notice the threaded part at first, I just read "crown". You can crown satisfactorily with the right tool.
Suppressor threading is asking for trouble on a mill. Even if you had a big industrial CNC it would be a huge hassle to get your setup perfectly centered and aligned. AR barrels are cheap.
>>
>>
>>64893311
You need to think about the angle, not just X-Y concentricity. I suppose you could insert a long gauge pin into the muzzle and then run an indicator up and down that? You can't use the OD of the barrel because the bore might not be perfectly aligned with it, and you need to get this perfect otherwise you will have baffle strikes.

Dad died of cancer last year. He asked what gun I wanted out of the collection. Told him idk, something to compliment the 30-30. He gave my brother a single shot 12 gauge because the last time he gave him a gun he pawned it for drug money

Anybody know a good red dot/optic for a 8.7 in barrel AR? Engaging targets within 200 yards so I don’t think a magnification is needed.

I got 500 dollars plus an unknown amount back from taxes. Basically an 800 dollar budget. What is the most fun option of these for me to buy and use a 3x prism(vortex) on and why?
223 bolt gun (howa, tikka, savage), rdb, psak in 556, or t91 ar(assuming the 16" restocks or they can send it prepinand welded)?
If im missing any good options tell me.

Better than normal triggers and we just haven't swapped to them?
What's the truth of it? To me, it feels like they should be more common by now.

That. Most of the time you don't want a thumb trigger because your thumb is also being used to grip. Now if you had two thumbs like a chameleon then it might make sense. Otherwise it's going to be limited to situations where you aren't relying on your thumb to grip.

Turns you you need some kind of press tool to get the rear sight out and it's like 60 bucks. I don't need another one off tool, will I fuck up the rear sight if I go at it with a hammer and punch?

Probably either the bolt gun of the AK. Mostly because putting it on the RDB or AR will leave you feeling like you made a mistake when you start thinking about how it's going to work with night vision or thermals. Fixed power prisms aren't really that great with those.

Seriously. That's something that people need to get on top of. Make it closed top with provision to mount a rail on top. Chamber it in modern cartridges like .327 Federal, .357 Maximum, or .460 S&W. Set up the shotgun barrel to load like an M203 so it can take standard shells. That would make a super handy do-anything gun.

The one I've seen is a Rhineland Arms FG-9 which is a ridiculously overpriced PCC that superficially resembles an FG-42.
If that's something you actually want then I don't know what to tell you. Not only is it completely impractical and probably not very well made, but it is ludicrously expensive and not even close to what an FG-42 actually is. If you really want an FG-42 the Smith Machine Group repros are at least semi automatic rifles in 8mm Mauser that are mechanically similar (sans open bolt and full auto capabilities) but those are also ludicrously expensive with a very long wait time between ordering and receiving.
Just don't. You'll be spending good money that would be better spent on anything else to get something that you will not be satisfied with.
>>64901775
Wolf T91 would definitely be in budget. I have an RDB but that would be stretching it a bit unless you get one used for cheap.
Can't vouch for the Ruger American.
>>64901832
416 is much newer. MP5 has been around for a long time and has been widely licensed, plus all patents for it have run by now. If you just want an AR with a piston there are tons of options, such as the Wolf T91 upper the other anon asked about.

I usually go with whatever Primary Arms optic suits the budget and purpose. They make a very nice compact 3x although their closed emitter red dot is cheaper. I have one for my AK. Never had any issues with any PA optic.

A smith would charge like $100-150 for that job. Just get a competent one to do it. If you can give them just the bare barrel, it will be cheaper. But being so close to the FSP I'd err a little on the long side. If you can mark a "threads go no further back than here" point on a fully complete upper with handguards and gas block, that would be best as not to have problems with the gas block and flash hider touching. Also those "gold" mags are worn down black follower Okays. Pay no more than like $10. They're very common.

What else is on that rail? I see a backup rear sight and maybe something else. Remove those and try again; optics touching anything other than their mount can cause funky things to happen. Also, before tightening the mount, be sure it's pushed all the way FORWARD in the slot it's in before tightening down. Backwards to how you might instinctually install it, I know. It took me a while to get used to it but it's the right way.

Has any anon here made their own composite stock before? I mean, how hard can it really be? Only considering it because literally no one makes what I want. What's the core material of these things, anyways? I don't even want anything crazy, just want to figure out how I can make one and keep it stiff. Bedding and cuts would be cloned from a factory stock with urethane for ease of manufacture. Curious if anyone else has looked into this as I'm just starting. I do have some experience with molding and casting resin FWIW, just nothing this big or as demanding of being so dimensionally accurate. Not to mention the length and stiffness requirements. You can kinda fudge small parts into working when the shapes are organic and tolerances are "if I can make it fit, it's good". Not so with straight edges and inletting.

Fuck, I forgot my pic. Anyways, I have experience with silicones, urethane resins (hard), and urethane foam. Never anything with fiberglass or fillers. I'd try to make it in plywood and fudge the inletting with a mold of good inletting and bedding resin but holy fuck trust me plywood is so heavy lol. Been there done that; it weighs more than the barreled action and makes it extremely rear heavy.

Rdb are selling for 740-850 around me and that is why they are on the list. T91 i need to wait on restock for the 16in unless gunsmiths will pin and weld the 14.5. ruger american stanag looks nice but savage is cheaper and tikka does everything better and howa is slightly better built when I looked up reviews. I looked into them simply because I wasn't seeing stock for anything but the american predator. Some sites have the ranch.

Most "composite" stocks are just wood with a layer or two of fiberglass over the top. It's the same basic idea as surfboard construction. Make a core, cover it in cloth & resin, vac bag it, clean it up afterward.

>"wood stocks are bad because moisture means warping and swelling"
>buy composite stock
>look inside
>wood
Huh. But to be serious, that's odd; I figured they were wood free. I'll have to look into it more, thanks anon. I assumed inside they'd be dense foam or a resin mixed heavily with glass "balloons" (basically hollow sand) maybe with fiberglass poles or carbon/fiberglass/aluminum arrow shaft inside as a stiffener if required and a fiberglass shell. I know M16 A1/A2 stocks are foam filled as well as a few other guns including the Nylon 66 IIRC. Oddly all nylon shelled examples. Funny enough I don't think I even have a stock to copy and reverse engineer; all my stocks are either wood or nylon.
>>
>>64911930
There are some that are made in a mold with foam fill, that's also a thing.
This PDF is written with boat part fabrication in mind but the same procedures are used for making stocks too.

I dunno, everything else I read on it was that we hadn't figured out different gas port sizes yet and it was there to increase backpressure to ensure reliable cycling. Given the design of the moderator and how long it took the market to unfuck dissipators I believe it.
>>
Dumbass question, but in my defense I have never used a red dot before. But how do you really zero them? The reticle moves in relation to your eye so I worry about fucking it up. Also the dot is kinda obscuring the target so I can't even really tell if I'm aiming where I intend to aim
>>
>>64912340
Same as any other sight.
>shoot group using a support of some kind
>determine center of group.
>measure how far group is off from bullseye
>adjust screws the correct number of clicks
>fire another group to double check
>repeat as necessary.
RTFM to figure out if the adjustment screws move the reticle or the point of impact. It's not too hard to figure out. Let's say you shoot a group at 50 yards and you find out that it's 2.5 inches high and 3 inches to the right. Your manual says your optic has 1/4 MOA per click. Your elevation is off 5 MOA, so you need to adjust 20 clicks. Your windage is off 6 MOA so you'd adjust it 24 clicks.

when you adjust the zero you are moving the dot inside the sight. this is obviously exaggerated but you get the idea. right?
you want to move the dot into the center of your group on paper.
its not going look like it actually moved 1/4th of the way over when you look through it but the dot will have moved in the sight.

Just live with your bad decision, the gun still works. You spent money painting it, now your going to waste more money unpainting it but nothing is actually going to change. Now maybe if it was something with historical or sentimental value it would be worth refinishing but its polymer. Even if its discontinued and rare you could probaly get a replacement for it.

I'll have to check that out, thanks anon. Maybe I should check out resin company sites or send some emails to see if I can find more info. WestSystem, TotalBoat, AlumiLite, or Smooth-On, maybe. I know Smooth-On tends to have lots of random info pages; I wouldn't be surprised if they had a page on materials recommendations for stocks. Seems like every time I think about making something it seems they have a page with recommended materials and an example pic from a customer, often a commercial example/install. Probably a good time to use a stiff but flexible urethane mold and a ply box.

I think there's loads of different ways you could do it, it just depends on what your final goal is. I'd use different techniques for building a heavy benchrest gun vs. a lightweight backpacking rifle. Caliber matters too. If you're building a stock for something with light recoil then strength isn't much of a factor. OTOH if the stock is for a magnum hunting rifle with a super-light barrel then it needs to be reinforced in the critical areas so it can survive the recoil forces.

Oh it's for a magnum alright. ...22 mag.

I'm considering using some fiberglass poles in the center for stiffness but we'll see. Arrow shafts are also good, maybe even stiffer. Fiberglass or carbon. I'll probably go with a medium to high density foam core. Just unsure of glassing and especially inletting. Don't even have the rifle yet, just considering it. Wonder if a more enthusiast site like Sniper's Hide might have good info on something like this. Seems easy to find info on making and bedding wood, but composites and molds are really more of a boutique or commercial scale thing. I wonder if getting my hands on a cheap airsoft gun close to what I want might be a good option to use to modify and smooth out to make a mold from. I just have to keep in mind adding a shell of fiberglass means adding thickness on all surfaces. Makes bedding fun, though if I could get my hands on a screwed up wood or polymer stock, I could probably just cut the receiver section off, sand it down, and use it as an insert if I can keep it straight in the mold, much like steel reinforcements in polymer AK mags. Urethane foam sticks to wood very well FWIW. The whole thing is getting a coat of paint anyways.
