I have a pet theory that if Russia were ever to nuke ukraine (with the exception of ukraine doing something like setting off a dirty bomb in Moscow), China would likely nuke russia in retaliation or strike russia militarily somehow regardless. My reasoning is that if Russia nukes ukraine whilst being in the process of trying to annex it, and isn't immediately hit with some form of overwhelming retaliation by other nuclear powers, that will instantly cause every country in the world without nukes to start building them, including Japan and Taiwan, and China actually has far more to lose from nuclear proliferation than any other great power.

Corruption/Cost cutting/Sketchy building practices leading to the greatest human disaster in history is a completely plausible scenario to me given what we know about the "reliability" of Chinese engineering.
