Are terriers better and more efficient weapons than guns for getting rid of unwanted animals?

A little stoat fella.

Is there a reason why JRTs seem to be relatively healthy even when purebred? I've had several over my life and other than being retarded and eating things or fighting they seem to live extremely long and healthy lives compared to abominations like the modern bulldogs

JRTs at least have some working line enthusiasts that breed them to do shit. A lot of guys in the south will get one for squirrels, coon, and rabbits. The thing that really sets them apart though has always been their personalities. They’re angry naughty little bastards always looking for trouble and that’s what their owners like about them. They’re as much of a grandpa dog as they are a grandma dog. No need for freaky features.

Jagdterriers still king though. Those lil niggas give zero fucks.

They are the most fearless little shits man. My JRT refuses to play with smaller dogs and only wants the bigger ones, so at the park he'll go look for a lab or shepherd or something and happily get sent flying

Yup. Terriers are the ballsiest most driven little critters ever bred by man. They’ve fucked up a few breeds but most still retain that fuck you attitude. You should check out the New Yorkers that take theirs around going vigilante on rats. It’s fucking gnarly.

It's a shame how many working dog breeds got turned into freaks for aesthetic purposes. The dachshund was perfectly fine and already pretty long but someone decided to play god and make them a mess of spinal issues with useless legs. A suburban terrier can still do most of what its ancestors did but a badger would btfo a weiner dog

There are still working dachshunds. They’re usually called teckels. It’s almost unanimously the Wirehaired variety. They make good blood tracking dogs. They have a lot of that terrier mentality and hound dog nose.

There are two modern bulldog breeds that were specifically designed to unfuck them. The Olde English, which was made by an American using domestic farm animal techniques, and the Continental which was made by the Swedes (I think) that tried the inverse. The Olde English looks exactly like the breed used to, they are fairly long lived, and they can be big mother fuckers (not fat). I had one, he lived to be 12 and was 80lbs of muscle despite sleeping 16 hours a day and being a giant pussy. The I had to replace his knees though because as he got older, the stupid fuck kept thinking he was young and could jump off tall shit. He never broke anything, but the arthritis that set in because of that meant he needed knee replacement surgery on both of his hind legs when he was like 9. I eventually had him put to sleep when he had lost most of his sight, had bladder and bowel issues, and his hips were going. Even at the end, he was still sharp, big, and a giant pussy.

Big dogs that are pussies are endearing.

Once had a massive Alsacian that probably weighed more than me visit my place and it ended up being afraid of my geriatric and demented ginger cat because as a puppy a cat bullied him

much heavier on maintenance
can get parasites and become inoperable
much more effective in europe than north america

as far as I understand, the core issue with "purebred" dogs is that breeders basically turn the breed into a caricature of itself because that's how you win dog shows; working lines tend to be healthier because they're bred on criteria that aren't just having the most sloped back (with most hip problems) or shortest snout (with most difficulty breathing) because the kennel club decided that the breed had a sloped back or short snout back in 1892 and judges them at shows based on which dogs most prominently exhibit the defined traits

Yeah, but they're excellent marksmen, fencers, and investigators.

Kind of reminds me of some of the great danes I've had. Big friendly, loving, and the biggest cowards you could ever meet. One of them nearly broke a door down because she was so scared during a lightning storm

Many years ago I was doing a tidy up of pigs and goats on a farm for a fella and because I did such a good job he'd decided to emotionally blackmail me with this big dumb-ass puppy that was 'no good' to be a pig-dog. He'd gotten some kind of notion that if you combined a great dane with a rottweiler and a doberman that you'd get the ideal catch-dog once the runners had bailed up the pig. Then this fucking chonking big unit would come in and grab the pig so you could go knife it to death.
>Needless to say, this is why shooting them is so much fucking easier
Titan didn't want to chase or hurt anything his whole damn life, he ended up being a bit under 3ft at the shoulder, 160lb and had a head the size of a 4gal bucket, about as empty most of the time.
Honestly the ideal family pet, loved playing with children, let them ride on his back, wouldn't chase livestock, didn't fight other dogs, liked cats, would bark if someone new turned up to visit and you'd take one look and just nope the fuck out of robbing the place. He ran away in the middle of a storm one night and got himself killed by a passing truck which was heartbreaking.

It's that, but also the fact that certain breeds tend to be susceptible to certain health problems, and thus purebred dogs have a higher chance that the specific fucked up gene gets passed on to them
But yeah, show dogs are an absolute disgrace

>certain breeds tend to be susceptible to certain health problems
And why do you think that is?

I have a great fondness for mutts. I grew up on a farm and almost every farm dog was the result of thousands of generations of random unplanned dog sex, and they were all fantastic at all the major farm dog tasks, including: following you, jumping into truck beds or cabs when told to, and eating.

The dog is the primary component of a fully-functioning "dog" system. The gun is just an accessory component, albeit a potent and crucial one, of a fully-functioning "human" system. I hope this helps clarify things.

JRTs are performance bred not show bred. That gives them a leg up.
>>
>>64914327
Because they are small dogs. Less cells to mutate, and less weight to crush their bones by the age of 10. Healthiest dog breed is the chihuahua: guess what chihuahuas are known for (besides barking their heads off)

That's a European badger bro. They're bros, cute, and just want to do their own thing.

Not to be confused with North American and African badgers, who are violent niggers - but that comes with part of living in that 'hood.

>great dane with a rottweiler and a doberman
Your pig farmer friend probably had livestock smarter than him, but all 3 breeds are GOAT for different reasons and mixing them probably gave a great, albeit weird-looking, dog.

>It's a shame how many working dog breeds got turned into freaks for aesthetic purposes.
That's basically just times changing. A few hundred years ago hardly anybody could afford the luxury of a pet dog. If you had a dog it was because it performed a task of some kind, and that's what all the various dog breeds were for. Some were for protecting livestock, others for hunting, etc. Even among something like "hunting" you had different specializations...scent hounds, retrievers, etc.

These days dogs are more of a fashion accessory than anything else, and people pick based on aesthetics without even thinking about the practical features of the breed.

>>64921480
Lol. Exactly. The inbreeding required to optimize show characteristics has all sorts of side effects. But it's not just "side" effects. People often don't think about the main function of a dog. I.e. Terriers were bred to kill small animals like rats. That's fantastic if you have a rat problem. If you don't have a rat problem then owning a terrier is just pointless. Owning a terrier and getting mad when it chases everything even remotely rat-like is moronic.

>>64921555
A good rule of thumb is that mutts tend to be pretty smart and mentally well-adjusted as far as dogs go. Purebreds are basically hyper autistic about one particular thing, and if you don't let them do [thing] then you can expect all sorts of behavioral problems because they're basically throwing autism tantrums all the time.
