My state has pretty loose rules on hunting overall (.223 is allowed for deer) but an absolute blanket ban on crossbow hunting.

that is fucking weird. NJ is shotgun only and for a very limited amount of time and only some areas. plus a short muzzle loading season. apparently the archery season is like 5 months long and the state DNR or whatever it's called gets archers for culling instead of gun owners

i dont get it what is the issue? like is this nj is super restrictive on gun hunting? but some of those other states definitely aren't. bow hunting is lots of fun. know a bunch of guys who have switched. not if they depend on the meat on the table but if its more sport it adds challenge.

I'm not surprised that Connecticut is that high. We have a fair amount of public hunting land but the state government basically only wants you to use bows and/or the situations in which you can use rifles is really restrictive. It's been a while since I looked up the rules on the DEEP website, but I came away with the general impression that they don't want you to use guns when hunting deer.

New Jersey limiting it to shotguns makes sense, it's the most densely populated state in the country so unless you're right in the middle of the pine barrens you aren't far from civilization. It's less "guns bad" and more you don't want your kid playing in your front yard getting domed because some guy insisted you aren't a man unless you hunt with high velocity rifle rounds.

NJ shotgun season is short, but you can take as many deer as you want I'm pretty sure.
Like, literally fill a truck bed up with deer every day of the season and it's cool.
NJ has just an insane amount of deer.
Black bear too, pretty sure they somehow have the highest population density of black bear in the country or something insane like that.

the usurer and speculator governor kept illegally canceling bear season. Like he did it multiple times. I think he was allowed to legally cancel it some years but he also just illegally canceled it at least one year in a way that was obviously illegal but the lawsuit to uncancel it took longer than bear season so it the season was still canceled
