Russia is entirely dependent on Chinese fibre optic manufacturers as their only domestic producer, JSC Optic Fiber Systems, has been bombed by Ukraine in 2025. JSC still hasn't resumed operation.

The data center boom triggered by investments into AI increased the world's demand for fibre-optic cables by a lot. Russian buyers are having to pay between 2.5 to 4 times more for than last year and could face a potential shortage in the near future.

Fiber optic cables literally grow on trees in Ukraine why don't they ask for some of theirs

tbf that's kinda a both sides issue since it's about global prices rising. that being said, given sanctions, they will absolutely be paying a giga premium on those fiber optics, moreso than ukraine

Thanks AI.

Yes, but you have to harvest them, untangle them, and check for breakages or weakspots.

I'll sell them 10km of fiber in exchange for a 32GB DDR5 stick.

I just want cheap HDDs again.

I feel your pain.

I almost never hit timing right but one of my few good moves was building a few big new NAS systems almost exactly a year ago. Now they'd cost like 200 fucking percent more I hate it so much. I put 256GB of ram into one of my VM servers, a 32GB DDR4-3200 rdimm brand new was $85. Now years later instead of being even cheaper it's pure rape. Fuck this timeline.

I thought the one thing the soviets/russians made really well was fiber optic cables, what happened?

After the collapse of the Soviet Union Russia shifted heavily into cable assembly instead of also investing into high-end fiber preform production. Instead, Russia started importing high-grade optical fiber in greater quantity during the 90s.

Optic Fiber Systems JSC (the company that got bombed) was an attempt to jumpstart the domestic production of optical fiber preform and high-grade fiber again in the 2010s.
