So I'm looking to get a shotgun for shooting clays and eventually going duck hunting with, and I'm at a crossroads. Should I get an old used Husqvarna/Merkel/Beretta/whatever double barrel shotgun, or should I instead get a new Beretta A300 Ultima? Furthermore, should I get a 12 or 20 gauge shotgun?

they're both fine but a double feels way nicer. if you can afford a decent one (not turkshit) I'd go for it.

I'd go with an old double if you're just getting into it, just don't buy anything that hails from Anatolia

Thanks. Just out of curiosity, what makes the newer Turkish double barrels so bad? I've been tempted by them before, but everyone I've talked to says to avoid them at all costs.

It's not that exactly Turkish double barrels are bad, it's that everything that comes out of Turkey is bad. It's a third world country in the middle east, they manage to fuck up air rifles.

Turk shotguns have gotten to the point where they wont detonate in your hands but they have very short service lives so youre effectively throwing good money out. It wouldn't be a bad idea to find a used american or european model at your local store or see if you cant rent one for a session to see if you like the sport

turk double guns are shit. aren't most duck guns semi auto 10 gauge or 3.5 inch semi auto 12 gauge due to waterfowl lead hunting restrictions?

I'm looking at this myself right now after having a blast doing a skeet comp. I just showed up to get the training on loading the thrower and was going to run it with my M4, but someone there keeps a spare over under around just in case someone needs to borrow a more well suited gun. Range isn't too fuddy and were entirely cool with me using the M4 for it, it was just hard as fuck to hit shit with it with how fast they go in skeet so it was much appreciated.
Right now I'm thinking of either getting a Browning Citori Composite 30" for around about 1800 or looking for a used gun. Something I don't ever HAVE to upgrade from but isn't going all out before I even know what I want out of a clays gun either.

Was also thinking of one of the sporting specific A400s, but not having to chase shells after each station is pretty nice.
