That seems a bit close to lob nukes around. Surely they would have a larger range, right?

Only photos on indigenous (if you can call it that) is a Trubia A4.
Based on Renault FT but with small arms firing ports added to the hull. Most notably is a unique turret that is actually two halves. Each gun could rotate on its own. The argument was if a gun is disabled you still got another. Honestly a better idea than having two guys working around each other on a seperate gun in the small turret.

Something that size with a little 3 ton Hiab knuckle boom and dozer, or just a tiny box blade.
Just so I can fire the thing up, including a functional MG3 flopping about, and grade my driveway. Or drive it a few blocks to do my parent's driveway.

>if anything about a field gun make it unsuitable as a tank gun
Bulk. Really that is the big problem as you have to make it fit inside a turret. Other than that no field guns can make decent tank guns. The 75mm used on the Lee and Sherman are basically a modified version of that Frog 1897 when it boils down to it.

Sd.Kfz.182 was cool looking, but underpowered.
They needed something like this to retrofit (also into Panther) which'd make it and the Sd.Kfz.186 Hunting Tiger viable machines

>>65025812
? If referring to the earlier Pz.Kpfw I—IV series, those were designed in the 1930s around essentially one engine that was below 300 hp (even without the additional armor III-IV and later StuGs, they could have used an engine in the 400 to 500 hp class to retain mobility advantage during the 1940s)
Panther was designed around the Tiger I engine, that for tanks under 55 tons was adequate. Once you arrive at the Sd.Kfz. 182 and 186 it's a different story and order of magnitude, i.e. not good enough to keep using the Tiger I powerplant.

Well the Charioteer with the 20pdr was pretty much that to the Cromwell. The only downside to it though is that if you are going for 105 there are arguably a lot more capable newer chassis around that would accommodate it better and if you are going for a 105 may as well try a 120?

This.
It wouldn't have met parity, but given everything they (didn't) have to work with, it's an impressive achievement.
>Country can't manufacture a metal wheel.
>Tank, sans guns, can be built in backyard of average farmer with local materials and local skill level.
>Impregnable to small arms fire. Requires AT to take it out.
Don't get me wrong, there's a lot wrong with it. It's taller than a Maus, slower than one too. It can't turn while moving. It gets penetrated by any AT grade munitions. It never got a proper cannon.
But it's a genuinely cool bit of history, and for what Semple himself was working with, it's a damn impressive achievement.
