Whiplash (2014)

Its really good. I was scared of the teacher throughout the movie he does a really good job.
The ending is quite weird because in that moment the drummer finally gets the recognition he wanted, so he and teacher share this sort of abusive yet intimate moment of joy and im wondering to myself, was the teacher right? Do the ends justify the means?
Is being cruel in order to inspire greatness actually just?

Who knows....but the ending definitely seems ambiguous to whether what the teacher did was good or bad.

I remember watching this movie with my transbian gf.

The ending is supposed to be read as the villain winning, you're not supposed to feel good for main character for becoming great at drumming because it costed him his life and happiness that is not outweighed by a single moment of great joy.

Same Anon, wanted to add that "do the ends justify the means?" Is flawed because the end was BAD, the real question you should be asking about what Fletcher does is "What do we do when this behaviour gives results?"

You always give something to greatness, no matter how you try to avoid it. The costs can be negotiated without anyone's harm or help but that doesn't stop it happening. The strategy of punishing everything except greatness can work with few people, those people will have always had the drive to make something valuable and singular. It will only make anything afterward cold in the shadow of those moments of unbearable pain and perfection, it will contribute greatly to burnout and maladjustment.
We can be fairly sure that abusing ourselves to failure and collapse without pause only serves to damage our lifespan and the length of our creative careers. The idea that art necessitates pain and suffering is a pathology we sell to eachother to justify undervaluing people who's passions reach our souls, and who's plight we undermine and doubt for our own convenience.
