This is true but I think the opening two paras are well below that standard. It comes across as really clunky from beginning to end. For example, she writes "are newly returned from holiday travels." There's no need for her to word this to include "are" as the verb, "newly returned" doesn't flow and just isn't the sort of thing people say (who says "hey I'm newly returned from Spain"), and same goes for "holiday travels." None of these odd choices contributes anything to the rhythm or meaning or tone. She could have just said "we just got back from our vacation." The only way this would work is if she's deliberately trying to write a protagonist who is ESL.

Is being an Asian woman the new publishing meta?

I read the story. The stuff where other races think their neuroses are profound is getting very tiresome. It is not art. The parts where she anguishes about eurocentric beauty standards; no one is doing this to her. If she feels less attractive and has a psychological complex where she compares herself to others, this is a personal issue requiring therapy. It is not white peoples fault. If she feels that way, as an american; america has historically been a white nation. So this is the most emphasized type of person in media, or was.
