The video game (which he helped create) is unironically better, it expands on the story, giving the characters backstories and the secret good ending, while less edgy than the short story, is a satisfying and hopeful conclusion to the story.

As a gigantic fag for Harlan, I Have no Mouth isn't even one of his best works. I'd say it's one of his worst. Like it's still good but it's a shitpost he wrote in one night and it shows.

He openly admitted to writing it on a lark in one night, almost certainly high off coke or something. It's fun but lacks any real substance or polish, which many of his other stuff has in spades.
A Boy and His Dog, for example, does a far better job of still being immersive in the world and the protagonist's mindset without feeling like it was written by someone who hadn't slept in 72 hours.
The Movie of Boy and His Dog is also great until like the last 10 minutes, but the book is better.
