I'll also add that besids the reading problems, they can't write either. I see many 5th, 6th graders who have trouble recognizing letters, distinguishing a b from a d, etc. They have no fine motor skills and write on par with kindergarteners from 20 years ago. If they're typing, then they'll rely completely on speech-to-text.

The problem is that people don't consume books anymore, and I mean it in general. Some people read literature, but most reading is already done in the short form—short stories, essays, maybe poems, brief reports, and so on.
Some people believe this is a problem that is born from the new generation, but they have it backwards. Children and young adults mostly consume whatever they are being fed and what society presents as interesting, cool or whatever the kids are calling it nowadays. And there is a huge industry producing short works (in about any kind of product even) because it's a better way to keep the economic machine running.
It's noticeable in academia: we don't read books, we read papers. Most research is forgettable, and in most cases waiting to publish until you have a large study wouldn't hurt the advancement of science. But the more you publish the more you add to your curriculum, the more the university boasts about how much they publish, the most your department boast about how much they publish, you get paid more, you can ask for more money, and so on---and I believe this is becoming true everywhere.
Is it good? Probably not. But not many people are willing to devote years to write a novel that very likely is going to be completely ignored, when they can write 20 short stories and maybe sell a couple.

This curriculum isn't strictly enforced but highly encouraged. According to this article it's primarily wholly black schools adopting it and the few white majority ones are not. Yeah, obviously most of the picks are shit but dumb but if it gets a few ghetto kids into reading maybe it's worth trying.

American literacy in the Civil War and immediately after was higher, with King James bibles and itinerant seasonal tutors in agricultural areas. Literacy was commonplace, until mass education turned the public into wet-LLMs-- the problem aren't the dogshit to random selections, it's the normgroid commisars fresh outta the diploma mills assigning busy work and the students only being required to parrot back plot points. They aren't being shown how to engage with text, or think. And the last boomer holdouts that might've inserted some actual grammar/logic by Middle School aged out a decade ago.

I mean what is MUCH more needed arguably is:

1)A Curiosity to know
2)Understanding the interpretations of it
3)An understanding that you're not an expert in the field

The trvke that killed the boomer: Someone who AI summaries the constitution and court interpretations is far more knowledgeable high IQ compared to someone who can read 1700s old English documents. Same thing with someone who just ai summarizes and watched YouTube videos of a bunch of 1900s documents than spends 7-12 hours unironically reading boomer slop on a weekly basis.
