Author’s barely disguised fetish out of nowhere. Reading any fantasy author except a handful few is worthless

I tried to give it a chance after the premise turned out to be utter shit, but it is pretty worthless as a whole.

I heard that GGK was a really good author, and I was recommended this book to start. I thought it was kind of shit and now people tell me that Al'Rassan and Sarantium are way better, but I can't find the motivation to actually try them.

What was his fetish?

What's the fetish in question?

At least the book has an ending Georgie

GGKay is a hack.

they are a significant improvement.

I don't know why people recommend Tigana as a start. It's generic and one of his worst. I guess because it's typical high fantasy to an extent, unlike the niche he caved for himself with his latter novels...

Anyway, give Al-Rassan or The Sarantine Mosaic a shot. If neither works for you, Kay just isn't your thing.

The problem with Tigana is it feels like the "good" goys did nothing to deserve their victory and the evil king was more relatable.

Whatever you imagine she pulled out from under her bed tells more about you than the author :D

Most of his early books are boring. Fionavar Tapestry I couldn’t even finish the first book. Tigana I also didn’t like but I could finish it. Lions of Al Rassan is the best. an incredible book. One of my favorites. Followed closely by a Song for Arbonne.

Maybe OP means that sorceress who just appears in the book to have sex with one of the main characters and then have tea with another sorceress who is actually important to the plot?

Why is Tigana high recommended outside of /lit/? It's very, very average.

This must be the key to the sour grapes.
These people want GRRM's fetishes

I think maybe the reason could be that Tigana is a loose allegory for the history of Israel, with the main characters representing Jews who tragically and unfairly lost their beloved homeland (Judea/Tigana) and fight to get it back. So it's basically Zionism: The Novel and yes, Guy Gavriel Kay is Jewish.

Notably, under this interpretation the evil sorcerer king who is the main villain of the novel represents the Christian church. The other evil sorcerer king would be Islam. The events are transplanted into a fantasy version of Italy because Jews really, really hate Rome and want to imagine it suffering and being colonized.

No, he would have to represent God who does not want Jews to have that land back because they broke covenants time after time. Actual Jews know this and take it to heart. Only Zionists (godless atheist jews or cultist Sabbatians) think they can make a home there.
Truth is stranger than the fiction.

Doesn't the main character have the power to enslave any sorcerer at his leisure? This interpretation...

Tigana was my first Kay's book. It was average indeed
The next batch are better. The Lions of Al-Rassan particularly and I really like Under Heaven/River of Stars
Currently reading first Fionavar and it was tough to read. Too many lores and characters crammed together at the same time.
