I know this isn’t a request board, and I do hope that I can be forgiven for that, but I’m in a very dark place right now. My son has cancer and I’m in a loveless marriage. I JUST want books or any kind of reading material that’ll make me feel better. Funny? Wholesome? Fun? Constructive? Please help me. Just anything that’ll make me feel better. Thank you so much in advance.

Don’t worry anon, there’s nothing wrong with making threads here asking for recommendations. It sounds like you’re in a really brutal situation. I’m really sorry. What kinda books have you liked in the past? I’m trying to think of some. Maybe ‘I am a Cat’ by Soseki? I haven’t read it but seems whimsical

Thank you! I’ve never heard of that one. Sadly the only books I’ve ever taken a liking to are depressing ones like “Stoner” and “Les Miserables” and others like that. I just want to escape to a positive place, but literally just have a good time. Nothing too deep unless it’s constructive. Thank you and anyone else for recommendations. I’ll be monitoring this thread, and if I don’t get back to you it’s because I have to work a 12 hr shift soon and I can’t be on my phone at work. Thank you!

I’m really sorry about that anon. I’ll keep you in my thoughts. Have you tried Gargantua and Pantagruel by Rabelais? It’s one of my all time favourites, and is still funny after half a millennium, it always manages to cheer me up plus he’s a brilliant writer.

I'm really sorry for you pain, anon. Christopher Moore books are very funny (Fool is my favorite) and Winter's Tale is funny and whimsical. And Howl's Moving Castle is funny, whimsical and cozy.
If you want simple stories that have happy endings, I would unironically suggest you check out some YA- NOT the kind on booktok, but the kind you read when you were in school. I used to read books about knights, which I found very comfy. Gerald Morris' Squire's Tales, Tamora Pierce's Tortall series, and the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede. I also really loved the Dragonriders of Pern series, though that's a little heavier. Maybe you can re-read books you loved as a kid? Maybe you can read them together with your son?
I really hope this helps you.
