Can't believe we are actually getting a new VOTOMS anime in this gay fuckass timeline we are currently living in, AND it's being directed by the kinomeister himself, Oshii. I don't give a fuck about anything else, I just gotta survive long enough to watch this.

Patlabor, GitS, and now Votoms. Might be a good year for mecha.
The Grey Witch is a weird choice what with it being the title of the first Lodoss Wars novel, somebody at Sunrise must be really into witches. It's a cute coincidence as Izubuchi was the illustrator for all the early Lodoss stuff and he's directing Patlabor EZY.
Super cerebral AT with lots of dense dialogue and literary references could be fun anyway.

I only watched the main series, are the OVA worth?
Also the main series was largely influenced by sci-fi movies of that time, which one is this new one be inspired by? Avatar?

>I've heard his modern stuff has been pretty washed
to be fair, he only has one directing credits in the last 16 years and it was an attempt at creating a slapstick comedy
his own other credits are a little bit of script writing and story boarding/composition

In the cartoon, it was them porting over the animation trick used to make the Doms slide, I think.
But Doms use literal hover jets while VOTOMS move on wheels with ground contact, like roller skates. While their movement being highly stylized is sensible enough in cell animation, it really falls flat in photo realistic 3D animation.

They've only shown CG mecha so far, and the mecha have been CG in Votoms since Pailsen Files in 2006 (with the one exception of Case;Irvine). The Hokuto no Ken shit looks way worse than these CG Scopedogs too.

I think everyone is half excited and half worried. Will they be able to complete something that can be called Votoms, or will it end up being something Votoms-like?

For the most part, yeah.
Big Battle is like a really good episode of the original series extended to 45 minutes.
Roots of Ambition covers Chirico joining the Red Shoulders and sets up Pailsen. Solid watch.
The Last Red Shoulder is a lot of fun, cool action and an incredible AT design in the Bloodsucker.
Shining Heresy is largely okay until the last episode (or two, I forget when Chirico makes his move) where it gets much more exciting. The overall idea for the plot is also pretty interesting.
I skipped Phantom Arc on the recommendation of the friend who convinced me to watch VOTOMS. The last time I ignored his advice to skip something I ended up watching Macross II, so I'm willing to trust him when he says it's trash.
Alone Again is okay, it has some solid moments but overall it didn't really grab me.
I really enjoyed Case;Irvine, the main crux of it is one solid arena fight using some fighting styles that don't come up anywhere else in the franchise.
I thought Finder was boring, but I still respect it as an experiment for the different kinds of stories that can be told within the setting.

It basically undoes everything from the TV show and Shining Heresy but Chirico walks away from it all with another Wiseman baby to raise.

Phantom Arc goes back to Kummen just to show us Pol Pot was in fact a terrible leader.
>>
>>
>>23710837
I liked Phantom Arc but it's because I really liked Chirico's friends enough to watch what's essentiallya play-by-play revisit of each location of the show as well as some of the plotlines. There's still some interesting plot or character moments you'd miss by skipping it, and there's a text-only continuation of it where you deal with whatever's happening here: >>23710850
Mellowlink was very nice but I haven't seen either of the Case ones
>>
>>
>>23710960
Phantom arc was alright but leaned a bit too hard on the 'member berries, especially at the end wherewiseman brings chirco to his core and then chirco just kills him in the exact same way with the exact same reaction, like holy shit how can he be this retarded
>>
>>23710248
It's just trend chasing. Witches are currently "in" for whatever reason. Look at some of the most popular manga currently running: Witchriv, Ichi the Witch, Witch Watch, etc. The kids want witches, and Bandai being a business, by god is going to give them witches.
>>
>>
>>
>>23711030
It did, but the remberberries worked well on me because I really did like the supporting cast and it somehow felt like it's been so long since we saw our beloved trio (24 years since Big Battle's release and then Phantom Arc), call it cheap but it worked on me, although it's not great if the main highlight of a show or movie consists of it pointing to a prior and better show (I'm fucking looking at you Gcucks). It was neat to see how everyone was doing, with us gettingsome peaceful and happy closure with the desert ladyas well.I did think that last bit was really really fucking stupid though. Buddy you were still alive and you decided to just bank on your identical plot and hope and got defeated the same way again? On the bright side I think you're advanced and smart enough to have a SECOND backup, on the other hand I think you might be too legitimately stupid to live. Either that or the file transfer process turned you retarded.
Also it's not skippable if you want to read the text story and see how the ending of possibly the entire story goes (I have yet to do so)

I guess the backdrop of the 100 years war fits oshi's style more than making GitS dry or using Patlabour to philosophise about article 5, but even then the political backdrop of votoms is more just there to give Chirico excuses to blow things up while running from secret police

I'm interested in the fact Mamoru Oshii got to touch VOTOMS to begin with, the man prefers his melodrama and philosophy more than action. I wonder how balanced VOTOMS will be between those 2 opposing ends with him involved, I hope there's more action.
