I’ve seen winspector and I thought it was fine, the rescue aspect was actually a bit more intense than I was expecting and loved the book end finale by having the first criminal be the last, Solbrain and the next series are the only Metal hero shows I haven’t watched yet but I have heard they’re slightly better
>>
>>
>>23736330
>>23736166
I actually agree. Winspector hit a very good balance between "rescue" and "hero", but Solbrain leans too hard on "Rescue". The criminals are often portrayed as victims too and the heroes attempt to rescue them from the situations they create themselves (although the criminals can just die during this for tragic episode endings). The main issue with this in a toku show is that it ends up meaning -very- little action in most episodes. The "rescue" part takes much more focus, and since we're talking about a show from 1991 that isn't heavily using CGI, it often means just carrying around people with flames in the background or props falling on them. It all gets very samey. Solbrain considers the previous hero Fire an "edgy" character compared to its protagonists.
Exceedraft feels more like "generic toku", but I'd easily take it over Solbrain just because it has more consistent action and doesn't resort to sad stories about enemy of the week so often.
>>
>>23736554
That bit of Solbrain leaning too hard on “Rescue” was foreshadowed at the end of winspector which sounds about right given it’s an acronym for the “Soul and Brain”. Again I haven’t seen the show myself yet and I probably don’t intend to anytime soon given I already have a backlog of shows I want to watch first

I think it's funny that it turned out Jiger was male this whole time and that him being female was just someone's headcanon that got treated like fact this whole time. I've read the Gamera and Daiei books and it never once said anything about Jiger being female. What I'm curious now though, where exactly did the misconception come from? I guess for the longest time it was a safe assumption, given he did lay eggs but there's been evidence to prove contrary now. Does anyone know when it first started? Curious.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>23738393
Except it does? Even you choose to ignore that, there is nothing stating Jiger was ever female. I've actually even bought official Daiei monster encyclopedias and asked some Japanese people around, and I could never find anything concrete. Again, it was just someone's headcanon that got treated as fact.

In the beginning? Sure. But as it goes on it starts going more and more towards the batshit, including havingthe litteral Prince Of Darkness himself , capital-S Satan, as the final boss.

I also just personally think that the more they expand on the Makai world and culture, the less interesting it is. The original Garo nailed the atmosphere and feeling of this mysterious ancient order of warriors and magicians protecting humanity from the shadows because we saw a lot of it from Kaoru's point of view and knew almost nothing about it, so it gave the actual supernatural stuff a legitimate otherworldly air. Now that there are basically zero normal people in the cast it's turned into something mundane.
>>
>>23739879
NTA, I think part of the problem is that GARO wasn't written as a grand universe that's being uncovered with each instalment. Amemiya, Kaji, and Kobayashi didn't create an expansive backstory and lore to be used in future shows/movies.
The people creating all sequels were building off of what came before and making it up as they went.
It's not really surprising that problems arised after the first show. All their best ideas where going to be expressed in that first show, and maybe the first few movies right after. That's just the nature of writing, and why they had to introduce new characters to follow, and animeverses.
>>
>>
>>23740217
You see that kind of thing primarily in the first season. There's this implication that the Makai community wasn't as big or as old as later seasons would show. Makai Knights, or at least titled ones, were a rarity and one covers a large territory, that sort of thing.

Yeah. Solbrain and Exceedraft are two completely different extremes in comparison to Winspector's balance of Rescue and Hero. They even brought back Ryouma to be a regular as Knight Fire, probably because he hasn't gotten enough rescue missions compared to his combat prowess.Let me change the topic for a bit, so I want to talk about the Chinese Gransazer line, and I really hope we get updates if all of their Chouseishin can combine by making them full triple-changers...

Try literally every toku ever made since you're clearly not hard to please. In all seriousness, check out the 90s Kamen Rider movies. King-Ohger is a kino show despite (or because of) living and breathing Babylon 5-level graphics.
>>
>>

Marvel level special effects means pure cgi slop.
Toku doesn't have that, even recently.
But if you want your cgi slop stuff, all the Reiwa Kamen Rider shows dump a bunch of cgi money into the first few episodes of each show, but then stops that because no one can afford to keep that up.

Hagane was such a wet fart of a series. You could tell they were working on a shoestring budget and most of it probably went just into creating the Hagane suit. I remember hearing that the times Garo was fully gold were digital recolors as well because apparently the original Sho suit doesn't exist anymore and all they have is Dark.

every fight is Jiban getting the living shit kicked out of him for like 5 minutes straight without throwing a single punch, then in the last 30 seconds when he's about to lose he remembers he has weapons and one shots that monster.
That is literally every single fight.
>>
>>
>>23745132
I think they planned it as a movie with small budget but decided to stretch it into a 12 TV series. The pacing is all over a place and sometime a few episodes ended in a very weird place.

The whole plot is him trying to purify the Garo armor so he can use it again after he burned it out at the end of Hagane, so I'm sure it will be. It does make me wonder if they came up with this whole plot because the actual suit isn't usable right now or something.
>>
>>23750886
I find the Ryuga verse keeps getting bleaker and bleaker with every new series, and because of outside circumstances, pretty much none of his buddy knights from the first series would ever come back to help him. I wonder how far they could carry the franchise with Ryuga since with the new scandal I think Kouga verse probably won't get anything new now unless they dial back all the way to continue young Taiga story.
>>
>>
>>
>>23751935
Souma is probably the most likely candidate to return, now as a titled knight since it would give them an excuse to reuse the Zango suit with some modification. It honestly baffled me why they even bother making a physical suit for something that only appeared for a few minutes.

Crow and Raiga deserve a second chance, with a not shit script or ridiculous ass pulls, or trying to ride on nostalgia and member berries where we can really feel Raiga's struggle against the Horrors, where Crow is actually useful, with a major villain introduced around halfway like Kiba / Barago or even Jinga who is actually a badass. They can throw in a giant titty Euclidian / Geigeresque giganto booba Horror and tentacle rape Garo at the end like usual.

Remember how me & someone else co-subbed the front half of Rainbowman a while back? Some of you may also remember how that person also subbed the front half of Diamond Eye. Bad news is, while neither of those projects are dead, it'll be at least one hot minute before they pick either of those back up. If I remember correctly, Juspion, Changeman, Flashman, & Jiraiya started the huge late 80's early 90's Brazilian toku boom so even though they also got every other Metal Hero through Solbrain, Maskman, Goggle V, Machineman, Byclosser, Cybercop, Kamen Riders BLACK & RX, Poitrine, & uhhh (checks notes), Fuun Lion-Maru, those shows are usually given precedent.
Oh, & before that they'd gotten plenty of 60's/early 70's toku like the first 3 Ultramen, Giant Robo, Ambassador Magma, Spectreman, & National Kid, Brazilian boomers love National kid.
>>
>>
>>23756742
Yeah but Juspion was so popular that when they brought Spielban over, they called it "Jaspion 2" despite the two shows being completely unconnected. Of all of those tokus they got, Juspion is the most iconic and beloved to them.

I only have 4 eps left of Janperson....I'm not ready for it to end
>>
>>
>>23757478
I just finished Janperson myself. I will say that I found the second half less to my tastes (it's still really good, just that it was so different after they expanded the cast such that I personally preferred solo Janperson).
The decisions made within the final battle did a really good job of closing out Janperson's arc and Billgoldy's ultimate plan is extremely good at establishing grand-finale level stakes.
>>
>>
>>23757501
I agree, and I enjoy the side cast. But it did mean less direct screentime with the episodic characters which were my favorite parts of the earlier episodes.
They didn't really go away, like there were the episodes with the immortal man or the deep sea robot which are I feel were more aligned with my favorite parts of Janperson.
It wasn't a downgrade, more just focusing on different aspects of the series.
>>
>>23739879
Personally I like how they expanded the world, but these are disposable ideas that rarely come back.
Every new season is "There's this mega ancient (new) Horror you have to beat and a (new) traitor who you know won't be able to control the monster." Retsuden and Zeros are cool.
Now, the real crime is that they threw away the horror-genre component and never brought it back (Heir of Steel Ep1 showed promise but quickly fizzled out).
>>
>>23757660
What struck me most about the first season was seeing high-fantasy characters out of place in an urban setting, grappling with the differences between a black-and-white world of knights versus monsters, while all the other characters had more concrete problems.

There's some interesting stuff on the Garo website shop but I know it's all
1. Really expensive
2. Produced in highly limited quantities
3. Never going to appear on any aftermarket
4. Not for filthy gaijin
>>
>>23757666
Yeah that was kind of the whole draw of it at first. I remember the first season was described as an "urban gothic fantasy" and that quality definitely diminishes as the series goes on and there's less of these wackos running around in leather swinging swords at each other interacting with normal everyday people.
