Sidonia was great until Nihei's daughter broke him and he turned it into a slogging harem. Then again, the harem consisted of

The animation is kind of jank cel-shaded CGshit but the story overall is much better paced because it cuts out a fairly large chunk of the slower middle of the series and wisely condenses the final arc into a movie. The manga is still fairly decent, but understand that Sidonia is about the time Nihei started to forget how to shade. It's nowhere near as bad as it would get in Aposimz, but it's also significantly worse than some of his classic work like Blame.

it's pretty faithful, but the action scenes feel way better in the manga. the anime just doesn't capture the sense of speed or scale
also, as is typically the case, you get more cool worldbuilding stuff in the manga that didn't make the cut for the show
