These wannabe Spacenoids never had to worry about breathing efficiently or recycling their dead, did they?

Seriously, I'm rewatching First Gundam and most places on Earth is shown as deserted, impoverished, or destroyed, while colonies are middle class suburban paradises.
Side 6 is a mix of thriving metropolis and beautiful countryside, it's a great place to live.

For Zeon Zum Deikun, it was about the rise of Newtypes that would break the stranglehold that the Federation had on the space colonies. For the Zabi family, it was about taking control of the space colonies and ruling in the Federation's stead. The ruling class never cared about the masses, they just wanted power, which they didn't have under the Federation. The ones that had these luxuries only did so with the Federation's permission, and often because they were colluding with them.
On a separate but unrelated note, compare this to the American Revolution. The Thirteen Colonies were extremely pampered by the British Empire, lived comfortable lives compared to all the other colonies, and still rebelled because they wanted self-governance.

Yeah, but it doesn’t explain why a mostly hollow, 1/3 of a O’Niell 3 did this.

I don't know about gigaton numbers but the pic is not surprising. Space Colonies are massive, I recall the elevator leading from the central hub to the surfaces had a length (ie radius) of 3000 M. Then it also has a layer of soil and water bodies. Then add the buildings and other structures.

To be really really fair, earth during the one year war is kinda in a fucked up state since the operation british (launching a whole side on the planet) caused a massive climatic catastrophe alongside a land invasion
