MDs are just pattern matching AI, ALICE actually develops continuous thought with a sense of self. A few characters point out that MDs are pretty dumb without someone coordinating them. They're probably closer to the AI in the F90s. ALICE has an additional system built on top of the learning computer that makes it actually intelligent.

Alice kinda died in similar fashion, being cooked by atmosphere re entry. Obviously AI is never meant to be something that high budgeted in UC, it only has 1 server, separated into 3 different core fighters. You remove one of them and the AI reduces into a bare minimum learning computer. Alice served her purpose as a warfare AI, she was disposable.
