That my good jigger, is a buggy fucked up mess - which we were told is now fixed. Just a visual glitch - if you check the replay you can see the 'true' position of the pieces on the bottom edge of the border.

What happens is - as soon as two pieces are connected, those two pieces start to slowly decay into transparent 'glass' pieces. When you attach a new piece to the group, it resets the timer and makes the group fully visible again.
If you check the replay in the top left you'll see Twilight's cutiemark is left unassembled for most of the puzzle, while normally we'd just assemble it, in this case it would just turn fully transparent after 10 mintues, so we left it until it was needed.

It's definitely easier - because if you have an area of flat colour, you don't just have to look at the shape of the nubs, you can look at the shape of the whole piece. But it can get a little misleading - sometimes two or more pieces can fit in a space that looks like it might hold only one piece.
