I saw Opaline on a magazine cover in G4, but she was an Earth pony. Could G5 just be an alternate history story where she is an alicorn instead?

I'm pretty sure that's not really her. However, Opaline was actually featured in the comics as a unicorn. Divisive, but could easily be explained as a disguise for her alicorn-ness.

G5 already seems like it’s set in an alternate timeline, given how we have Creaturequestria already by the end of G4, making it harder for Opaline to divide and conquer ponykind like that, so I think Opaline being an alicorn instead of an Earth pony would be a good point of divergence. We didn’t hear much about her in G4 other than her possibly being on a magazine cover, so it could very well be that one pony has an extra role to fulfill that changes everything.

It may be hard to convince them to abandon the friendships they have had after the G4 finale affirmed that they can be together despite them being of different races. Since this was already tested once, this would only make it more difficult to do this with. Also, wouldn’t the burning of the treebrary only make our little ponies want to criminalize arson more or establish better fire departments?
