We can tell Equestrian ponies don't mate like real world ponies because they are monogamous. They get married and bear offspring with only one mate, unlike real horses which are harem maters. Therefore we are not sure if they even have intense estrus behavior, or if they do it is likely socially constrained to marriage or at least monogamous relationships, similar to how humans are not naturally monogamous but still became monogamous because of culture and the fact it works better for building civilizations.
