>>
>>129474421
there's a lot of 90s alt rock bands that vaguely sounded shoegaze at points since that sound was in the air. ride was one of those bands, and for some reason, have been memed into being called a shoegaze band despite having only one britpop album that sounds vaguely shoegaze

There are three types of Shoegaze.
1. Actual Shoegaze
coming purely from UK bands. Ride, Slowdive, Chapterhouse, Catherine Wheel etc. lots of reverb, chorus, goth and baggy influence and not too far from Britpop and Oasis.
2. My Bloody Valentine
very influential to the other two types but they rejected being shoegaze. for one they have all the american influence that sets them apart but they also rejected the british reverb/chorus/flanger driven rock that seemed to soft to them.
sauce: https://youtu.be/MdhGlxl4tAs?si=h1aQBXzdOJYU71tz
3. Heavy/fuzzy Shoegaze
all of them are ultimately ripping of Smashing Pumpkins. typical slowdive and ride fans hate this type and claim it's not shoegaze. deftones, calm, narrow head, starflyer 59, trauma ray, hum and arguably yeule belong here.

I don't understand this, minerva is the only deftones song that sounds vaguely like that sound, there are some other dream pop sounding songs here and there but I'd call their music post metal at most

'gazers how do you feel about TikTok and zoomers memeing this genre?
>>
>>129496296
I think it's awesome honestly, it's given new life to a genre that was seemingly on its way out.
Emerging bands that started blending styles like emo, stoner rock, metal, psychedelic rock, etc with it have been a byproduct of it and have kept things from growing stale which has been an issue in the past. Can only take so many Daysleepers clones before I check out.

Yay I've been waiting for a question like this.

I second the other anon's recs, but I'd go as far as to say Wong Kar-Wai's entire filmography, especially Fallen Angles and In the Mood for Love.
Also some other Asian films like A Long Day's Journey Into the Night and Goodbye, Dragon Inn (this second one is if you like really slow paced stuff).

You mentioned Lost in Translation, but you should also check out Sofia Coppola's other films like Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette (I didn't really like that one but it's very atmospheric nonetheless)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and I'm Thinking of Ending Things also come to mind as dreamlike.

Some other films that captured a similar dreamy feeling for me were Tarkovsky's Stalker and Solaris, mostly because of the slow pacing.

Some anime also has that surreal atmosphere, Angel's Egg and Perfect Blue would be my recs here.

From older films I'd recommend Last Year at Marienbad, it's b&w but still gets the atmosphere right.

From newer releases I think Aftersun might fit.

I don't associate David Lynch with shoegaze much since I find his work more nightmarish than dreamy, though he's still one of my favorite directors.
If you like twin peaks you should definitely check out his films if you haven't.
Mulholland Drive is the first one that comes to mind and definitely check out Eraserhead, but my favorite is Indland Empire.

I have more recommendations but this is what most narrowly fits imo.
>>
>>129516525
>Aftersun
great mention, blends memory and reality in a way that isn't too heady but is really charming and realistic, one of my favorite films of recent times and definitely a summer shoegaze kind of vibe. great post in general, will be checking the few i don't know

Hot takes: if Smashing Pumpkins broke up after Gish they would be considered Shoegaze.

Unpopular opinions: Slowdive’s albums have gotten progressively better as they have moved through time (Slowdive 2017 > Souvlaki).
>>
>>129524684
Gish is more Goth influenced while Siamese Dream has strong Loveless influence (and the same engineer on purpose). I think only Mayonaise can really be considered Shoegaze but the Pumpkins totally invented the style of hum, Deftones and all those clones in modern shoegaze.

If you have it or if it's worsened?
Just put some ear plugs in your ears and you should be able to hear it. A very quiet room works too. I've no idea how to check if it's objectively louder. Simply thinking about it makes mine louder. I haven't had mine 2 months yet and I'm still wanting to kill myself. I went out shooting (first time) with family friends and no one brought up ear protection. I can tell my hearing is fucked, but the doctor said it looks "normal" on an audiogram. Kill me.

both members have their own solo things theyre mainly focusing on now because the Candy Claws eruption in popularity was well after they were done as a group and they weren't really prepared for it. You might like some of the earlier Ylayali albums (specifically pic rel: yy, picked apart, and pumpkin patch), although I'd say it's closer to the reverse of what you described, more like distorted slowcore. Often very slow and sparse. 2/3 of the albums I mentioned aren't on Bandcamp &c anymore, but here's yy
https://lilytapesanddiscs.bandcamp.com/album/yy
a song from a comp
https://sleeperrecords.bandcamp.com/track/wegmans
and a Mega I keep of his albums from that time

"Wegmans" (give it a couple minutes) and especially "here" are probably closest to what you're looking for. Of the albums I mentioned, pumpkin patch probably has the songs closest to what you want ("blessed again," "squirrels," "third act"), and it's a favourite of mine as part of a "trilogy" with the two albums before it.

He's one of my favourite contemporary musicians, and seeing his music change over the years has been really neat to watch, and has made me think a lot about the artistic process.
