>soulful early Indie work only has a handful of ratings
>super commercialized slop has 2000+ ratings
>bold major label statement has an unforgivably low middling score
>disappointing Adult Contemporary last ditch has an earned 3.15
This is unacceptable.

Her first two albums, especially The Echo, have a certain innocence to them that would be lost by the time she went commercial on Now That the Light Is Fading. The whole album is a farewell to adolescence and the anxiety of entering adulthood, but what distinguishes it is its strong emotional centerpiece on the closing track "Satellite" which she wrote at age 17. The song is a slow ballad about yearning to be free yet seen that crescendos at its lyrical climax, and damn, do those closing lyrics hit hard:
>So send me out to space and cut me free
>And like a satellite, just look for me
Blood Ballet would continue much of those themes, although instead of mourning adolescence, these would confront the first steps of adulthood. The lyrics here, while deeply emotional, are much rawer and unleashed without being scornful. While lacking a strong emotional centerpiece, the album still features lovely tunes like the homage to her high school boyfriend "James" who also happened to play trumpet on "Satellite".
For the sake of this thread, here's her early live performances:

We've been over this before. It's common knowledge she's a silver spoon brat.

Like I said, HIiaPL really isn't my style. Sure, Retrograde, Light On, Fallingwater and Burning are worthy but the rest of that album is mediocre.

Steady as a rock
I stand, I wait
With eyes that see
But eyes that can't erase
And hands that hold
But hands that can't embrace
A creature longing for some saving grace
Oh and I have long since
Seen the sun
It set along the banks
When I was young
Oh, and it's been long
Since you've been near
But fate was never kind to us, my dear
So send me out to space
And cut me free
And like a satellite
Just look for me
Oh and if there's darkness
In your sight
I'll be in the corner of the night
We live
We grow
We die
It snows
The ro
Tation
The earth
The sun
We write
We read
We love
We need
We need
We need
We need
I need
I need
I need
I need
I need
So send me into space
And cut me free
And like a satellite
Just look for me

What irritates me so much about Don't Forget Me is that the album was such a missed opportunity. As though she wanted to be the Millennial Natalie Imbruglia or LeAnn Rimes, two artists who I consider to be sonic wallpaper. "Torn" is the definition of waiting room music. It's not that the title track and The Kill aren't great because they are, but the rest of the album ranges from above average at best to dreck at worst with most being utterly mediocre.
If there's a single word that sums it up beyond forgettable, it's inconsequential. The whole album's concept is breaking up and moving on, but there's no payoff.
