Polyphia was a new sound, a shitty one, but new. And not something niche either, zoomer guitarists are changed forever now.
It hugely raised the average skill level too. It's based on trap and hard to play so it attracts competitive normies. 15 years ago some people would seriously bring up fucking Kurt Cobain when talking about great guitar technique. Now guitar is on the radar for an ocean of people for those mediocre losers to get steamrolled by whenever they open their mouths.

as far as metal goes there are a few bad Vildhjarta imitators out there and they're very easy to spot so I'd guess that qualifies

true, more or less the same with Animals as Leader's split coil bridge + thumb trick sound
very metallic and percussive, I'm not always in the mood for it but when I am it scratches the itch

There are lots of new sounds, just go on Soundcloud and Bandcamp. But taking those sounds and making compelling music out of it is seemingly very difficult without a certain amount of skill and discipline. If you gave someone with a new unique vision a budget and the best studio musicians and producers that would be one way, but it's just nepobabies and AI-adjacent pop.

There is good new and interesting music on Bandcamp etc. that's well produced too. The problem is there's so much generic garbage to go through. And Bandcamp doesn't promote anything new that doesn't have a gay hipster aesthetic or isn't hip hop slop. Here's 3 random selections from their "New and Notable" section:
https://geejay.bandcamp.com/album/who-have-i-become
https://pinkmexico.bandcamp.com/track/pink-mexico-g-d-wishes-he-was-he re
https://coralinegaye.bandcamp.com/album/la-couverture-des-choses-2
They have hardly any supporters and it's all generic hipster trash. I know of several bands on there with way more supporters but you'd never see them in the "New and Notable" etc. sections.
>but it's just nepobabies and AI-adjacent pop
I think all of the new music Bandcamp etc. promotes is only being promoted because they're being paid to promote it or because the people behind the music have enough money to manipulate the algorithms. You can tell all of Bandcamp is coded by amateurs and I highly doubt they have systems in place to detect manipulation.
I wish there was a web app that can go through all new music and give it some kind of uniqueness score so I don't have to go through endless slop to find something new and interesting.

Agreed that Bandcamp doesnt promote much of anything that's worthwhile, but this is just more algorithm suckling. It is many misses vs rare hits when combing through things, but that's fine with me and part of the crate digging experience since forever. Once something is curated for me, I feel like I've lost the autonomy and surprises that come with stumbling onto things organically.

rub those three brain cells of yours together and learn what “syntax” and “passive vs. active” verbiage is before using MY (not yours) language, you TikTok brained SSRI’d out faggot…. treat English like a flower. Show it respect!

Sure I can understand that. But I don't think an app that sorts music by uniqueness would hurt that experience. You'd just be digging through stuff that's more unique instead of loads of generic crap... nobody would be curating anything for you. They already do all sorts of acoustic fingerprinting so I'm sure it could be done.
Also, most people don't have the time to do a digging experience with how much new music is released every day now. One of my favorite genres is post-rock for example and there's hundreds of new post-rock albums released on bandcamp every single day. I wouldn't have the time to listen to it all even if it's all I did every day.

>before, normies no play guitar because guitar make edgy music or faggot music
>free reign for losers to justify that what they do is hard by hyping up mediocre musicians
>now, normies play guitar to make normie music
>some normies skilled
>talent pool much bigger
>mediocre edgy guitarists not special anymore
>can no longer convince anyone that Cobain can actually play
easy enough to follow now, retard?
>MY (not yours)
retard.

I'm not the anon you're replying to. Cobain wasn't some ridiculous technical player like Vai, Satriani etc., but he did write very interesting unique chord progressions with lots of modal interchange without knowing much theory. Beato likes to talk about it a lot. I'm not a Nirvana fanboy or anything... just saying. Also, shred guitar is corny and gay and nobody wants to listen to it besides other shred guitarists.

Same. Been that way for many years.
>and there's hundreds of new post-rock albums released on bandcamp every single day.
Speaking of uniqueness, i listened through tons of 2025 post-rock on Bandcamp, and the vast majority was as cookie cutter as you could get. Very unfortunate place the genre has gone.

Yep, I try to check out new post-rock all the time but it's all so formulaic and generic now. It pisses me off so much you have no idea lol. Who the fuck is even listening to all of this trash? I can't even stand bands like TWDY, Caspian, God is an Astronaut, etc. They ruined the entire fucking genre imo and now we have thousands of "post-rock" bands that all sound exactly the fucking same. What made post-rock great was nobody really sounded the same and everyone had their own unique sound.
That's why I wish there was an app or something that could at least tell you "hey this sounds pretty much exactly like 99% of the music in this genre".

>>129576334
Yeah I know. It's just especially annoying because it was never really supposed to be a codified genre like that in the first place, just an umbrella term. And there's probably some new interesting "post-rock" type stuff being released but it's buried under piles of trash.
