When did rock finally die? My vote is for 2013.
It was clearly on its last legs by the late 2000s and AM was the last rock album to have any relevance in the mainstream.

AM is a very solid choice for the last real mainstream rock album, but I'll add a couple extra years and say that in 2015, that Alabama Shakes album was the last time a newer rock band had records that sold and garnered a lot of press and awards. But then of course they broke up and the trends shifted towards R&B and trap

Grunge was the death knell and post-grunge was the funeral.
In all honesty, though, rock had a good run, but there's just nothing else to do with it besides revive old shit for the millionth time. it's been milked bone-dry.

Was this album ever relevant in the US mainstream? I genuinely have no idea.

>the album became the band's most successful in the United States, debuting at number six on the Billboard 200 and topping four other Billboard charts. The single "Do I Wanna Know?" became the band's first song to enter the Billboard Hot 100. In 2023, the album was certified four-times platinum in the US by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Mid 80's to early 90's. Alt-rock, grunge, new wave, metal, death, none of these could really be considered rock.
