Ebmaj7/9 resonates within me for some reason sounds glittery, shiny, healing like holy light, like part of my soul is within that sound, it came from there.

I want to chase melody and become one with it but she is so elusive. But when you find her & it connects you get in the zone & she possesses you & you just feel divinely inspired & you can just flow all one motion. You will know when it happens to you doesn't even feel human that thing is from another realm, a better one.

the build build quality is amazing: metal chassis, durable, built for touring musicians

I'm not sure in what context you wouldn't be able to just roll those intervals since you're already so close or change the way chord is voiced. I think there's a reason no one wears anything to extend their reach. There are probably too many tactile side effects. It will solve the reach issue in certain places but make everything else more awkward.

A digital piano. So 88 keys, hammer action, portable preferred, built-in speakers preferred as it'll be primarily used for practicing.
I already own a MIDI controller, I'm just looking for a solid "proper" digital piano. I /prod/ for fun and am looking to improve my piano skills (I've been playing keys for nearly 20 years but mostly pop & rockslop playing)

the weeeuuu sound is violin

and the main wururwuwruwruuuu noise, yes, its flute like you were able to identify it. They might be virtual SWAM instruments they sound very realistic. But who knows.

Roland FP-10. $500, on sale for $400 sometimes. Has the PHA-4 action, which is in their more expensive boards like FP-60X and RD88. Its action is triple sensor (better velocity detection) and has escapement (simulates the hammer rebounding from string upon contact and its associated keypress feeling). Not all boards have these features even if they're around $1000 or more. I've owned an FP-30, which had the same action. Its a bit of a heavier action too if you prefer that.

Are they Shia Zealots?

Don't worry man Islam will reform sooner than later. They haven't been faring well so either the Imams stay retarded and double down on their retardation or they finally see that maybe God really doesn't give a fuck about human trivialities because why would a GOD care about such unimportant matters anyway. "OMG creation is enjoying beautifully arranged sound!?" This enrages me! lmao imagine how petty that would be.

You are probably talking with an actual musician btw
>(I've been playing keys for nearly 20 years but mostly pop & rockslop playing)

Thats sus if true. Pretty good though. I'm glad /keys/ is getting more mainstream genre musicians interested in classical, jazz and even soundtracks whatever gets them to git gud is good for music overall. I feel like on average the skill level in Rock is too low nowadays and music is this beautiful art that the more you mastered the more versatile you become and it can take any form really, the more skilled you get the less you start caring about what genre your songs are, you can just sound good and come up with beautiful melody during improv jamming sessions with your friends.
>>

We are sunnis, they supported my music training back when i was a teenager (probably because i had no other hobby aside playing playstation) but something happened during my time moving to another town due to college and tldr by the time I talked about music again to them, their response was like "there isn't a single imam who considered music to be anything but haram'
Anyway I still play a handful of instruments despite all that, still play shows too when I get the chance (although mum is seething if i get paid money from that because it's considered haram money so I never disclose that), and keys is just never my strongest preference. Trying to re-train again but left hand independence is still hard to do.
>>
>>129900891
>"there isn't a single imam who considered music to be anything but haram'
The Imams are fucking scammers just doing it to keep a tight political control on the population the same shit happened pretty much across almost all Civilizatons that resisted sparation Church from State. They want to be the ones who dictate politics that's why they are so condescending. They are resisting the literal human will, heck the living will to like aesthetic sounds even Birds & Whales sing because they get it, they get how beautiful creation is so they just enjoy it.

Again why would God care & get mad about life enjoying creation. They think of God as this nefarous authortarian thing that gets mad if you aint conquering other people in it's name which is ridiculous. If God cared so much about conquest he would do it himself, its an omnipotent being.
So clearly that is not his behavior. It doesn't care about human trivialities. The Imams are wrong & brainwashed radicals or they are aware & they just make shit up to keep themselves as leaders of communities...

sheets are based I heard that once you learn its easier but you start reading slow.

Synthesia has its advantages like seeing the timing and hearing the tune of the song at the same time. But Sheets is all at your own pace. If you know the BPM of 4/4 3/4 etc and knows how to read one has no problem

Feel free to post a Sheet reading guide. I'm retarded about that topic so i cannot help anons on it. I unironically learn in Synthesia with midi, suspsiringly even Chatbots can make midi files for you to practice.

It depends on what you are looking for in a keyboard instrument. If you want something that is a powerful stage tool, replicates most acoustic instruments without much issue, & is built like a tank; the Nord would probably work well for you.
They have not been particularly fun to program, at least in my experience. That is also coming from someone who mostly programs Sequential Circuits, Moog, Korg, & Oberheim instruments, so I am bias to having something that is knob per function with no menus.

Oh ho, I've been wondering if a keys general will pop up on this place.

In that case, anyone got experience with the novation launchkey mk4? I'm thinking of getting it as a controller because it seems like the best option for the price. The arturia and maudio in that prace range (and higher) have that problem where the black keys send higher velocity than white keys with the same pressing force being used. I've heard the launchkey mk4 doesn't have that problem which makes it the best for me. If that's the case, that is.
>>
>>129907038
I will make sure /keys/ pops up around the weekends: Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Then it can sink in and get 404'd

Anons should practice on the weekends and work during the week.
>>
>>129907103
Nuh uh. Daily practice should be done. Or daily noodling at least. Either way, can make it a regular thing rather than just on the weekends cause why not.
>>
>>129907038
I've been thinking about getting a Launchkey 49 mk4 over the Arturia alternative as well -- I already have a couple digital pianos (gotta have one in every room).
>>
>>129907799
It just seems like a better option. I've briefly considered going for a keylab over the essential but even those have the velocity issues. The launchkey doesn't, on the other hand, if the reviews are to be believed. The only thing arturia has over launchkey is the software but to me, that's negligible if the keys suck. I'm gonna go for the 61 keys myself so I can play more stuff. I do hope to get a digital piano someday too but there's still plenty more stuff I need to get before I splurge for that.
>>
>>129907994
>The only thing arturia has over launchkey is the software
That's funny; I'm actually more interested in the software that comes with the Novation. My understanding of the Arturia software is that you're getting a heavily gimped version that is essentially just a preset player.
>>
>>129908089
Pretty much yeah, but there's tons of options in it when it comes to choosing keyboard models. I've tried the free version which is even more gimped and it's rather decent so I imagine the one you get with the keyboard is even better. Still gimped compared to the main one but yeah. I imagine in terms of quantity it wins in the end but I'm more interested in the lk software too, namely the obez. It's also pretty much a preset list with a few knobs to play around with but that's honestly better for a synth dummy like myself. I've been playing around with synths for a few years now but even then, their complexity always has me going back to presets so obez seems perfect.
>>
Before buying any keyboard always look at review vids on YouTube and make sure they aren't shills, if the video showcases it's functions and sound thats even better.
>>
>>129908454
My problem with youtube midi keyboard reviews is that they always spend a ton of time talking about stupid shit like chord and scale modes and only spend like two seconds talking about the keys. I don't think I've seen a single review of oxygen pro or keylab essential that mentioned the velocity issue between black and white keys and that is something that really should be mentioned.

Ok, I would love to show you around. But please keep in mind, the UI is very early along. I am using all the JUCE defaults, and they are an eyesore. Layout leaves something to be desired.
I am going to play the same basic C chord just to show you the features, mainly the FX, custom algorithm routing, the Unison mode and the acoustic modelling I did. Just give me 15 minutes to whip it up.
The engine is not quite there yet, the unison mode is a little scratchy for my taste and there are some bugs.
Also it goes without saying, as an FM synth, the sound is very digital.
>>
>>129910750
https://files.catbox.moe/tmtqn8.mp4
The cause of the scratchiness in the final few runs in the video are due to the fact that I have an amplification stage in my reverb, which really pushes out the staticy sort of scratch. I am experimenting with ways to fix it at the moment.
>>
>>129910887
isn't this just a synthesizer? so basically ur making a synth emulator from scratch is what ur saying.

I like it don't get me wrong, points for trying, just add interesting distortions / sounds to it and maybe I'll use it.

Yes it is. What were you expecting? I hate to erm ackshully you here but its not an emulator as such, its a unique engine. But I suppose you can consider it as such given that DX7 patches are 1 to 1 convertible to this engine with relatively okayish similarity. I am not sure what to call it.
> just add interesting distortions / sounds to it and maybe I'll use it.
I would like to thing that the engine is relatively flexible and can cover the range of sounds expected from an 6 op engine. I tried to show this off by transforming a pad sound into a marimba in 2 clicks. But I have no idea what YOU personally would find interesting.
But here is the thing, I need to design about 40 presets now and I always look for sound design practice anyway. So if you give me a detailed description of a kind of sound you might like or are looking for, I may just take a crack at it. Sounds fun

How do I read chords faster?
I can read single note lines just fine but when there's upper chord extensions specifically, I struggle. The best advice I've gotten is knowing what key you're playing in, which chords make up the key and doing that.
>>
>>129918327
Yeah.. you need to know your keys without even thinking about it.
For chords, you'll want to memorize the patterns... line-line-space, line-space-line, space-line-line, etc.

Dm7 Cm7 F#m7 Em7 Dm7 Am7 Cm7,

You miswrote guitar.

But yes, piano is fun. Once I started dabbling with keys, I ended up writing more songs than I ever did on guitar. It's really fun, all the virtual instruments are fun to play with and the way keys are laid out makes it so easy when it comes to writing and theory. In any case, definitely learn it.

You don't need a virtual guitar. Six strings, a good amp sim, some effects and you're golden. Guitar is life.

Don't get me wrong though, the keys are amazing. Synths and organ (b3 4 life) are my favorites but also being able to play any other instrument with midi is incredible. Alas, at the end of the day, pressing keys will never be as cool as picking, bending, tapping and sweeping. It's close though.

Optical Music Recognition (OMR)
It’s basically the musical equivalent of OCR (text scanning), but for sheet music.

They can:
Take a photo or scan of sheet music (even handwritten)
Detect notes, rhythms, clefs, etc.
Convert it into:
Notation (MusicXML)
MIDI (for DAWs)

- Software options
Free: Audiveris
Open-source OMR software
Converts sheet music > MusicXML > MIDI
Works with MuseScore, Finale, etc.

Great for printed scores
Handwritten works… but expect cleanup.

Paid (more accurate):
- PhotoScore Ultimate
High-end scanning + recognition
Exports directly to MIDI / notation
Can handle more complex scores

Better accuracy than free tools, still struggles with messy handwriting

- SmartScore
Long-standing professional OMR software
Converts scanned music > MIDI or notation
Used in more “serious” workflows

Mobile / AI tools (easy mode)
Score2MIDI (app)
Take a photo > get MIDI instantly
Supports handwritten input

- Super convenient, but:
Accuracy depends heavily on how clean your writing is

- Newer AI tools (experimental)
Some apps (like research projects or newer AI tools) try to read handwritten music better
Example: tools like Capriccio are built specifically for handwritten recognition

Still not perfect, handwriting is the hardest case

I might be slightly off depending on the exact tool version, but broadly:

Printed sheet music:
- Works very well (often 90%+ accuracy)

Handwritten music:
- Hit or miss

Clean, neat writing = decent results
Messy / stylized = lots of errors

Even the best tools usually require:
- manual correction after scanning

Best workflow:
Write music (paper or tablet) > Scan/photo it > Run through OMR (Audiveris / PhotoScore)

Open in:
- MuseScore
- Sibelius
- DAW (via MIDI)
Fix the mistakes manually
>>
>>129926710
Is that the best that AI can do? God, I fucking hate AI.
This is the first search result:
https://www.neuratron.com/notateme.html
One and done. No need to process an image/pdf/scan with OCR, it just instantly takes your handwritten input as you work.

>>
>>129932217
I posted last week, I've been a keys player for something like 17-18 years but I'm self taught, can only play by ear, and want to take it seriously starting this year. I'm looking into anything that has an excellent keybed for the lowest price (in europe). Initially, I was just looking at portable digital pianos for practicing with, however a MIDI controller may make more sense for me as I don't intend to use this for gigs or anything, just for practice and home recording. I already /prod/uce music for fun.
The weight of these "GrandTouch" models could be a problem if I want it in front of my desk (my desk is huge but the keyboard drawer can only take ~14kg/30lbs max), I guess I could set it up off to the side in my little home studio if I needed to. Wish I could demo these in a store.

>great way to get tunnel carpal syndrome
No. The movement to play that is a subtle back-and-forth rotation of the forearm.
>does that technique of going left and right, left and right on the scale have a name?
That's not a scale; that's a chord; they are arpeggios. It's called arpeggiation (but only pseuds use this form of the word).
>>129936053
I have never seen a professional pianist who is playing solo use sheets during their performance. They do if they're in an ensemble or playing the accompaniment for a soloist.

>>
>>129936111
I know its an arpeggiation but I mean specifically when it's long when it goes through more "octaves" you get what I mean. I know you can do the same shit in a small keyboard but that pattern is specific to full range (or at least 61 keys) pianos.
>>
I need a little double level stand. This is the only thing limiting my music at this point.

>>
>>129936342
>when it's long when it goes through more "octaves"
This doesn't change what it is. Just a multi-octave arpeggio. The pattern is not specific to full range (or at least 61 keys) pianos.
Arpeggiators included with modern keyboards will allow you to set the range of the arpeggio pattern, and you can set it to multiple octaves, even if the keyboard itself doesn't have that many physical keys.

I hope you can get one soon. That should be fun.

There absolutely is just based on the difference between sheet music and synthesia.
>autoscroll
That sounds disgusting. One of the benefits of sheet music is knowing where a given part is on the page (or screen in this case) so your eyes can instantly dart to that spot, whether it's the top left, middle middle, lower right, whatever. Autoscroll just destroys that benefit and is full retard, although not quite as full retard as synthesia.
I wouldn't mind a tablet displaying static sheet music with a foot pedal to control page changes.

I don't know how violin players do it, you have to have your fingerings down to the mm otherwise you are playing off pitch. I just don't have it in me to practice enough that I can do that

It's not, it's the easiest woodwind after the recorder.
>>
>>129950347
I have some basic in flute and moving to sax is easy because the fingering position is like 90% the same but the few differences are sax isn't in C so you have to adjust the fingering a bit (like when you're used to play D in flute, that fingering is now C in tenor/soprano sax) and sax actually has octave key which makes going up is way easier than flute where you have to control your embouchure.

an idea for making your tritone progression smoother
if you want to get from C major chord to F# major chord immediately, trying smoothen it by playing E on the bass for that F# major chord. with that there's at least 1 familiar note between those 2 chords from C to F#/E.
Kirinji used that sparingly and I copied that for my own composition

I have a Launchkey 88 MK3. The reason I got it is the Ableton Live integration, which is great. If they bring out a MK4 for the 88, I'm getting it, just to be able to use the step sequencer for drum sequencing and jamming.

I've been using it for a year and haven't noticed any degradation, but I use it for a few hours every week though.

I'm working through it. Currently at page 130. As someone already familiar with another instrument, I'd say it's a passable book. If you're doing it on your own, without a teacher, you'll probably have some questions from time to time. Most of it can be answered with the internet though. It should be enough to get us started with the piano. Depending on what your goal is, you'll definitely want to branch out towards that after the book. Mine is to acquire the same level of "freedom" on the piano as on the guitar. I want to be able to sit down at a piano and jam and improvise by myself, coming up with new music. I want to feel "safe" with the keys as I feel with the frets and strings on a guitar, i.e. know how to play every chord I want, every scale.

Reddit told me you can't learn the keyboard by using synthesia because it's missing
>Time signatures
>Key signatures (good for figuring out the progression)
>Tempo markings (yes you can see how fast they're falling in that particular implementation, but to me you lose something over a marking that says e.g. "Quick and Mysterious" and lets you interpret that for yourself. Not to mention something like a rubato marking)
>Dynamics, not just f and p but also all the little crescendos and decrescendos that give music its flavor
>Accents, staccato, legato
>Phrase marking
>Repeats, DC Coda etc
>Measure numbers (good for communication)
>Fingerings

Are you guys stupid? why do you use it lol

Synthesiaists just end up like farmhands who learned fiddle by rote.
My piano teacher actually broke us up into groups of four and taught us duet parts by rote and we would play those pieces as a group at the yearly recital without ever having seen the music. Kind of fun. A bit stressful if you forgot to practice for a week (because all we had to remember what was taught to us was a cassette tape recording of our lesson for the week).

Reddit has always been fucking stupid.

Stop. You shouldnt have a reddit account for anything other than read like trouble shooting tutorials on mods for a game or small things like that.

You can learn in Synthesia, learn to read sheets later tho both are useful. Synthesia is more intuitive I get it and newbies often prefer it, also its more like a video game like Guitar Hero, etc.
The point is something somewhere has to get your ass to practce if its Synthesia all good. You are still letting those fingers go.

Im not going to waste time going through all of this but its demonstratibly false. You get the sense of time signature/ dynamics, etc etc by actually listening to the music and playing along side it.
>Fingerings
Tons of videos literally have people playing it live and you can just copy what they are doing.

Sheet music is even worse for these things because you can't get a feel for how its actually meant to sound so it ends up sounding robotic and the rhymthm is all wrong.

>>129974252

>>
Maybe im just dumb but synthesia just moves too fast for me to learn from it, I keep having to slow it down and keep repeating sections. I prefer just being able to see the music right in front of me so I can go at my own pace. Its good for getting a sense of the rhythm though

>musescore.com has this greatest idea if your score has chords in it, the keyboard layout will also play the chords ON TOP of what's already written in the notation so you get some clustered fucks like this
>it's said you can turn it off if you download the app but i still have no idea how
>>
>>129974735
If you use the actual program there's a mode where the song doesn't advance until you've pressed the right keys
>>
>>129970663
Nice, thank you. That gave me a bit more confidence, as it was what I had also written.

Sometimes when transcribing, I come across some weird things. I'm not sure if the artist really played that or if I'm just hearing it wrong. For example this song has a section playing a full sounding Am chord on the keyboard while the guitar is playing an 8th note melody containing the notes F B C and A over it.

What is the minimum amount of daily practice that can actually help you to get better?

Less than 5 minutes doesnt seem to do it.
>>
>>129980786
1 hour daily, of course 5 minutes wont mean anything.
Maybe you can lock in the muscle memory of an arpeggio if you do it everyday for 5 min but its not enough.
>>
>>129980786
I don't think there's a black and white minimum
Some days you might play just 10 minutes, others you might play for hours. It's the day to day consistency that matters most I think, when you go for long stretches without playing at all that's when you lose progress particularly if you are trying to learn an existing piece. I would just play as long as you are enjoying yourself, perhaps in multiple small sessions over the day, and avoid forcing yourself to meet a quota so that you don't get burnt out.
>>
>>129980907
yeah its a given that playing is an activity you should do to relax and enjoy yourself. It's like competitive gaming, its a lot like it actually.

You play because you like it, you want to master it because you think it's sick what top level pros can do, so you grind to unlock that ease of flowing movement.
>>
>>129981016
never thought about it like that but i think that's actually a pretty good metaphor... so your goals inform ur decisions around practice whether you're playing as an outlet or grinding to perfect a certain stage (piece)
>>
>>129964999
u can do it anon!!! this is one of the first real things i learned besides dumb stuff like star wars cantina and stuff
>>
>>129964999

Getting better in what regard? You should be practicing fundamentals every time you are playing.

He however has more styles in his arsenal: classical, new age, jazz, bossa-nova, trance, etc turns out being classically trained does make a difference for a composer. That's why they are so valuable & sought after in music. Pianists from Conservatories of Music are high quality.

Yes, practice is exactly like working out which is why it needs repetition but it also must be entretaining. If you are feeling no passion, if it doesnt feel like a game to you then you won't get very far on Piano, it must be the activity you do to relax you must view it as Playing literally, it's just that that "Play time" also creates beautiful complex harmony when you git gud, learning theory is the game, it's how you start "Playing Competitively", the Meta, you can violate the Meta & not engage with it making up your own style but I suggest you learn the rules of "what sounds good" first. Find your Chords, your arpeggios, your favorite notes and tones. You do this by listening to music or noodling & you go like "this sounds beautiful" & then experiment if you can do either a polyrhythmic texture with it or something else. Coming up with music is literally like being a Magician experimenting to come up with new spells.
Try different distortions too.

How the FUCK do I nail difficult polyrhythms? There's this song I've been playing for months now and there are 2 parts where the melody changes from RH to LH, and you have to play a steady and fast rhythm in the RH while playing the melody in the left. I always fuck up the timing with my RH when I'm too focused on the LH melody and I fuck up the melody when I'm focused on keeping the rhythm in the RH. Playing more slowly doesn't really help and even if it does it doesn't transfer over to full speed. Should I cave and autistically remember every timing of every key press in those parts or is there a trick to true hand independence that I haven't heard of yet?
