Fewer things are so evocative for me as the 1994 Yes album “Talk”. Widely disliked by critics and fans, like all Yes albums of this era, it is and has always been one of my favorites. Of course I love the classic Yes lineup, and have spent so much time with Fragile, Close to the Edge, even Time and a Word. But Talk (along with the 2001 release “Magnification”) will always hold a special place in my heart. I can still recall the first time I heard it. I remember looking in the mirror afterwards experiencing a radiating tingle I've only since felt under the influence of psychedelics. I must’ve been about 13, downstairs on the couch. Sitting there with a laptop, I felt compelled immediately after beginning it to close my eyes and take it in. Not far into the first track, “The Calling”, I knew I was hearing something for the first of a thousand times. With no hyperbole I probably listened to it at least a thousand times. That track in particular almost every day in high school. I would listen to it on my solitary walks, around the neighborhood and down to the creek. I find it difficult to put into words how I feel when I hear it. From the first track to the end of the titular capstone epic, I am enraptured when I put this album on to this day. It transports me to a realm of adolescent optimism. Before the arc of my life was visible, when anything seemed possible, when everyone I love was at most a phone call away. Now everyone I love is dead. I have only so much time left and I know I'll spend a third of it pushing a mop around for minimum wage.
What albums do you suspect no one loves more than you do?

What are some essential King Crimson albums besides Red? Does TPTB count?

>Progressive metal is a genre that features Metal's amplified, guitar-driven sound and fuses it with technical proficiency and Progressive Rock-inspired virtuosity.
https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/progressive-metal/
TLDR: progressive metal is a combination of metal and progressive rock. Therefore prog metal is prog.

King Crimson really doesn't have any serious duds I think. ITWOP is too samey to ITCOTCK, Lizard is perhaps a little too scatterbrained, TOAPP is not as consistent as the other two 80s albums and Thrak has a fair amount of filler, but all of those albums have more than enough good qualities to make them worthwhile in their own ways. TPTB is pretty polarizing because of the obvious Tool influence and the dated production but I think it's still easily the most consistent and vigorous set of the Trey Gunn era.

how important are lyrics to you, /preg/? i think i have officially entered the "couldn't care less" zone
at least with magma there's a story behind most of their albums and there's even translations for certain words, but this is genuine nonsense territory.. and i fuck with it https://youtu.be/TjFn3G_uSko
>>
>>
>>129907672
There's no story behind Koenjihyakkei's lyrics and they are gibberish, but they're still structured like a language rather than just being random sounds.
IIRC they've only released lyrics for stuff on thier first album and a few Kobaian loanwords like Zeuhl Wortz shows up.

I know it's silly but what else would you call it?
I'm just pointing out that like Magma, they do actually sing in a constructed language with its own rules and recurring "words", but unlike Magma they've just never released a story or meaning to go along with it.

Disclaimer: not prog, I need help
what the fuck is going on in this song?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gXkbaYwG3I
If I were to count it and play, it's extremely tough. The second bar of the chorus has a weird length. The verse after the chorus has a different 1.
Then you watch a live video of it and the band seems to be unconscious of these rhythmic quirks.

Roger Waters drove his diesel tour bus up to the studio door. "Damn I love being the creative genius behind Pink Floyd" he said, punching an jewish child as he climbed out. "I think we should return the band to Syd" said David Gilmour; "Shut up libtard" came the reply from behind a veil of cigar smoke. "Please Rog" said the nebbish guitarist, "Abbey Road is the ancestral studio of our bandmates, where they have recorded in an entirely peaceful session for several years. They don't even know what band drama is."
"Sounds like WOKE NONSENSE to me" guffawed Waters, his very presence introducing LSD into the control booth as he cracked a Miller High Life. "This is Palestine country now, boy" he proclaimed before annoying interned sound engineers with an unregistered VCS3. The other studio staff scattered in terror, sheltering their nonbinary amps from the synthesized tones and slurs that now ripped through the baffled walls. "Kek" said Waters, stuffing Rick Wright's demos into the rubbish bin. "This is based. Wait until /prog/ hears about this"

The record business was fucking swimming in cash then. Major labels heavily promoted AOR radio at the expense of top 40 so that people would buy more albums than singles, therefore paying more, and the profit margins of the whole industry just skyrocketed in the 1970s. Chicago were pretty bold to come right out of the gate with three double albums even then, but companies were increasingly comfortable taking chances on it.
