something has been unearthed not released not shared not even composed in any normal way just dragged up from somewhere it should have stayed buried like a cassette dug out of wet soil that still remembers voices you can’t quite place and after thirteen years of nothing no signal no decay no half-life boards of canada don’t return they leak back in through a seam in reality like they never stopped recording somewhere else and we’re only just now catching the bleed-through and tape 5 doesn’t start it accumulates it gathers like electrical hum in an empty classroom like fluorescent lights buzzing over desks that haven’t been touched in decades and you start to feel it before you hear it and then suddenly it’s already there like you missed the beginning because THERE WAS NEVER A BEGINNING and the tone wobbles in that wrong way that deliberate misalignment like the tape machine itself is remembering incorrectly or refusing to remember correctly like the pitch is sagging under the weight of something older than the recording itself and you sit there thinking you’ve heard this before you KNOW you’ve heard this before but there’s no proof just the sensation that it’s always been inside your head waiting for the right moment to surface and then the visuals start cutting in and they’re wrong in a different way degraded footage that looks like it was copied too many times or maybe never copied at all just preserved in some magnetic stasis and the colors are that sick yellow green like decaying educational films and the shapes flicker in and out like they mean something like they’re symbols but they refuse to resolve into anything readable and the edits are too abrupt to be random but too meaningless to be intentional

now this arrives and it feels less like a teaser and more like a probe like they’re checking who’s still out there who still recognizes the pattern WHO IS STILL TUNED IN and if you feel it if something in you reacts before you can explain it if the sound feels like a memory you never lived then you were already part of it long before this showed up and everyone else they’ll just hear ambient loops and faded visuals and they’ll miss it completely but the ones who know will understand this for what IT ACTUALLY IS NOT A SONG NOT A VIDEO NOT A COMEBACK BUT CONTACT.

One thing that interests me is that this seems to be the first time they've actually acknowledged their visual aesthetic in an official capacity, like featuring humans and actual real life footage that would have only been seen in fan videos previously, if you get what I mean. Am I wrong? Like everything before this kind of existed within their own canon, or as static artwork, but this new video is almost directly mirroring humans and our real world. What do you guys think?

Aside from that, yeah listening to this got me choked up. It gives me the same feelings as listening to 'From one source all things depend'. i don't care what anyone says, but everything post-geogaddi does not have the same warmth. don't get me wrong, TCH is a fantastic album on its own and TH is also solid, but they don't scratch the same itch that mhtrtc and geogaddi do. their use of analog gear on those two albums gives them a certain tangible quality that they haven't even gotten close to since. i'm hoping whatever potential new music they have can touch upon that a bit more, because honestly TH felt a bit too formulaic for boc.

I didn't think much of it when it released but I listened again last week and I was like "wtf this is a masterpiece". Super dark as you say. The happy major key motif, the sliding timestretched percussion faintly in the back, the weird deep scuffed vocal lines questioning God and instilling existential dread, it's such a striking and effective combo. TH is slept on nothing else sounds like it.

the song itself doesn't sound like TH, but it seems like they are continuing the cinematic sound.

TH being as cinematic as it was kind of holds it back a little in terms of replay value. We'll see how it works out here, I love the song though, a lot. But I'm not sure I want another album that feels like a soundtrack

I think music is so diverse today, and bands are so diverse. If you were a rock band in the Eighties, you kind of had to stick to one thing. Now, in this age of Coachella and European festivals and stuff, it's kind of anything goes, so that allowed us to try different things.
