Boards of Canada are possibly releasing new music/album since their last full length album, Tomorrow's Harvest, released back in 2013. New cryptic promo campaign is currently ongoing.
What we know so far:
VHS tapes
>fans who have bought merch via WARP/Bleep have been receiving VHS tapes via mail
>around a dozen tapes have been received by fans so far
>contain distorted, cryptic footage, religious/cult imagery, reversed audio (including little star)
>contains strange spoken message
>different formats of the tapes exist (NTSC and PAL)
VHS tape: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B46_h1S1nhY
Posters
>appeared in England and the US
>feature the same hexagon design as the tapes
Confirmed officially by WARP records on Instagram: www.instagram.com/p/DXHH7TKjUtE

Going back to the discussion last thread about what they must be doing for a living, I do wonder. You'd think they could easily be producers or sound engineers to pay the bills and stuff, but its pretty remarkable just how little you hear of them. burial is like a Kardashian compared to them

I suppose they probably will have had steady physical sales down the years, but they don't seem to have gone more than gold in any locality since Tomorrow's Harvest. Their streaming figures are ok of course but with the main streams paying fuck all and without playing live periodically that doesn't strike me as "made for life" territory. They do get licensed for tv shows and films now then I guess

Its a pinned comment on a lot of youtube uploads of their songs by some born again Christian Fruitcake. He put the comments up years ago but has arguments with people about it to this day lol
>>129990844
I guess maybe they also could have avoided the trappings of a lot of bands and bought a house early in their career something like that

It's literally the most generic looking one of them all though, Even the lazy horror vibes aside, the gradient color on it makes it even cheaper looking.

ok but did anybody else think TH was kinda trash? it sounded like a mid soundtrack from an 80s movie or some shit.
they found a really great sound with TCH and I wish they continued developing that. here's hoping whatever this new thing is has acoustic elements.
>>
>>129991281
What's funny is that this used to happen way more frequently, newfag tourists are just getting their first taste of it now. Posting used to go down completely for hours at a time. 4chan has been remarkably stable in recent years compared to the days of Mootles' regime
>>
>>
>>129992088
It's by far the least listenable of their stuff but I get why they were trying to do.
Nothing is Real, Sundown, Semena Mertvkh and Reach For The Dead are as good as anything they have done.
But I wouldn't mind more acoustic stuff yeah

>>
>>129992088
it's a good album but it's their most derivative and least interesting album because of how inspired it is by 70s/80s horror soundtracks. it lacks the distinct BoC quality of their other 3 albums outside of Nothing is Real

how much did yall really like tomorrow's harvest? I've always been a huge BoC fan, and I was way tapped into the hype around TH in 2013. Probably listened to it like 5 times max in the years since. It's solid but idk, I was too hyped and it obviously wasn't gonna live up to their earlier shit. Just feel like i've been through this shit before...
Maybe now that I have little expectations I'll enjoy this one more. Either way new BoC is massive and I'm excited

I like the cult imagery. Part of me thinks that they're playing with the messiah returning aspect of cults to announce themselves as back. We've resurrected and now we're on our way.
Anyway can't wait for them to go on Rick Beato/Joe Rogan/Strictly Come Dancing.

Exciting. I was expecting more creepy Geogaddi style but this is something different.
2:12 I was sort of thinking this melody would resolve the same as Aphex's Girl/Boy Song, very similar:

Assuming this is a track from the album, I'm really interested as to what the general "style" of it will be. The woozy synths here feel MHTRTC-esque, but it also has the mechanical intensity of a lot of Tomorrow's Harvest, and the organic guitar that comes in at around 1:52 reminds me of The Campfire Headphase.
Wonderful song regardless, though.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2lyYEUPat8
They kinda did something similar with Tomorrow's Harvest, there was a VHS style teaser with an album track.
New track kinda feels like if Tomorrow's Harvest was a person but if they found God. Or someone calling themselves God.

This to me sounds hopeful, the accompanying footage of people reaching their hands out, the smiles. What if this explores that side of people that find themselves in these cults, reaching out for something.
That's not to say there's a good side to being part of a cult that brainwashes you, there isn't. But there is optimism and hope involved for the people that find themselves in them.

something has been unearthed not released not shared not even composed in any normal way just dragged up from somewhere it should have stayed buried like a cassette dug out of wet soil that still remembers voices you can’t quite place and after thirteen years of nothing no signal no decay no half-life boards of canada don’t return they leak back in through a seam in reality like they never stopped recording somewhere else and we’re only just now catching the bleed-through and tape 5 doesn’t start it accumulates it gathers like electrical hum in an empty classroom like fluorescent lights buzzing over desks that haven’t been touched in decades and you start to feel it before you hear it and then suddenly it’s already there like you missed the beginning because THERE WAS NEVER A BEGINNING and the tone wobbles in that wrong way that deliberate misalignment like the tape machine itself is remembering incorrectly or refusing to remember correctly like the pitch is sagging under the weight of something older than the recording itself and you sit there thinking you’ve heard this before you KNOW you’ve heard this before but there’s no proof just the sensation that it’s always been inside your head waiting for the right moment to surface and then the visuals start cutting in and they’re wrong in a different way degraded footage that looks like it was copied too many times or maybe never copied at all just preserved in some magnetic stasis and the colors are that sick yellow green like decaying educational films and the shapes flicker in and out like they mean something like they’re symbols but they refuse to resolve into anything readable and the edits are too abrupt to be random but too meaningless to be intentional

and that’s exactly where they operate right in that gap where intention disguises itself as accident and accident disguises itself as design and you keep watching trying to decode it trying to assign meaning but it slips every time like trying to remember a dream while it’s still dissolving in your hands THIS IS NOT A VIDEO THIS IS A TEST and it starts to feel like it’s watching you back like it’s measuring your reaction to see if you recognize something you shouldn’t the loop in the track keeps circling back on itself but it doesn’t feel like repetition it feels like conditioning like each pass is pressing the idea deeper into your brain flattening out resistance until you just accept it as something that’s always been there and the melody almost resolves but not quite and that’s the hook that’s the trap because your brain keeps reaching for completion that never arrives and you start to feel this tightness in your chest like nostalgia but it’s not nostalgia it’s something more invasive something that doesn’t belong to you and you realize you’re not just listening you’re being calibrated slowly adjusted to a frequency you forgot you were tuned to and THIS IS HOW THEY COME BACK not with a single release not with an announcement but with a signal designed to wake up the people who were already listening before it even existed because this is what it’s always been about not music not really but transmission preservation of something older than format older than medium something buried in analog artifacts and degraded memory and all those years of silence don’t feel like absence anymore they feel like incubation like this was always building somewhere out of reach and the tapes the fragments the hints they weren’t marketing they were breadcrumbs left deliberately spaced out so only the ones paying attention would follow
>>
now this arrives and it feels less like a teaser and more like a probe like they’re checking who’s still out there who still recognizes the pattern WHO IS STILL TUNED IN and if you feel it if something in you reacts before you can explain it if the sound feels like a memory you never lived then you were already part of it long before this showed up and everyone else they’ll just hear ambient loops and faded visuals and they’ll miss it completely but the ones who know will understand this for what IT ACTUALLY IS NOT A SONG NOT A VIDEO NOT A COMEBACK BUT CONTACT.

One thing that interests me is that this seems to be the first time they've actually acknowledged their visual aesthetic in an official capacity, like featuring humans and actual real life footage that would have only been seen in fan videos previously, if you get what I mean. Am I wrong? Like everything before this kind of existed within their own canon, or as static artwork, but this new video is almost directly mirroring humans and our real world. What do you guys think?
Aside from that, yeah listening to this got me choked up. It gives me the same feelings as listening to 'From one source all things depend'. I saw the notification on my phone early this morning and instantly scrambled to my computer to listen with headphones. Grateful to say i'm living in a time where I get to experience a BoC rollout

i don't care what anyone says, but everything post-geogaddi does not have the same warmth. don't get me wrong, TCH is a fantastic album on its own and TH is also solid, but they don't scratch the same itch that mhtrtc and geogaddi do. their use of analog gear on those two albums gives them a certain tangible quality that they haven't even gotten close to since. i'm hoping whatever potential new music they have can touch upon that a bit more, because honestly TH felt a bit too formulaic for boc.

Just listened to tape 5. I am a blubbering mess. After a lifetime waiting for a new BoC album, it's finally here. The future is bright friends

Pretty fucking happy man not gonna lie. Every single album they've release has happened to coincide with some life event for me. I just recently had my first kid, thinking I'd never hear new BOC again. So this drop divine, dudes, truly. And yeah I cried when that harp came out what of it

I didn't think much of it when it released but I listened again last week and I was like "wtf this is a masterpiece". Super dark as you say. The happy major key motif, the sliding timestretched percussion faintly in the back, the weird deep scuffed vocal lines questioning God and instilling existential dread, it's such a striking and effective combo. TH is slept on nothing else sounds like it.

the song itself doesn't sound like TH, but it seems like they are continuing the cinematic sound.
TH being as cinematic as it was kind of holds it back a little in terms of replay value. We'll see how it works out here, I love the song though, a lot. But I'm not sure I want another album that feels like a soundtrack

I hope to refine music, study it, try to find some area that I can unlock. I don't quite know how to explain it but it's there. These can't be the only notes in the world, there's got to be other notes some place, in some dimension, between the cracks on the piano keys.

We have such a great depth of human history in all of the arts, whether it's opera or mathematics or painting or classical music or jazz. There's so many things to study, new books to read, and certainly always ways to transform old ideas and to come up with new ones.

I think music is the greatest art form that exists, and I think people listen to music for different reasons, and it serves different purposes. Some of it is background music, and some of it is things that might affect a person's day, if not their life, or change an attitude. The best songs are the ones that make you feel something.

I believe music is like medicine. Like a good tonic, it can open your mind, strengthen and possibly even cure you. Music can work on many levels, and nothing I know of possesses the healing force that exists within music.

I think music is so diverse today, and bands are so diverse. If you were a rock band in the Eighties, you kind of had to stick to one thing. Now, in this age of Coachella and European festivals and stuff, it's kind of anything goes, so that allowed us to try different things.
