we're in this funny spot where even a low-end new bike is going to be a LOT better than midrange vintage. I'd never turn up my nose at a gaspipe steed but we're into a new era now.

I don't have one because in the 1990s wheels sucked ass and dropout spacing was too narrow to reasonably accommodate good dish with a brake disc.

I had to recently hunt for a fitting frame for my needs and I found a lot of aluminium garbage that has good specs (even stuff like look, bianchi etc.) but none of them were practical. Those nice used steel bikes for little money are starting to dry up and no one sensible would want some 90s aluminium meme bike or questionable integrity carbon bikes. Memeing steel out of existence will leave a massive market with 90s/00s aluminium trash no one wants.

I agree but your first post said the drivetrain was spotless. It isn't and that alone makes the bike less of a bargain.

well lack of mounting points is the biggest offender for sure but then you also get "tite gaps" that barely fits 25-28 tires, aggressive racer geometry, 90s garbage aluminium and also frame size is difficult to find since most people here are manlets.

yeah I had a choice of getting some new hi-ten mystery steel frame that is practical but even the cheapest one would cost double in comparison to a good vintage bike. I will stock up on a few vintage frames when I see some on sale since in comparison to say 12 years ago the market is very dry now and some of them aged poorly with rust and neglect. Right now the market is full with BSO, electric and used aluminium/ carbon bikes, clock is ticking for practical steel bikes.

They are ripe for 650b conversion. Then you get a suprr zippy bike with cushy tires and with room for fenders.
