>company retrofits miatas with a kit to be EV
>they want $20,000 just for the kit
would it really be that hard to buy a dead miata and put a gokart motor and battery in it? I really want a miata, and I think EVs are cool in principle but cant stand how gay they are in practice, but also cant justify buying a second car unless I can save gas or something with it

I don't think it's a great idea. There's a big risk that it won't feel like a Miata anymore. I'd pick another car with a shittier driveline for this.

How strict are autocross classes? I bought some things and want to buy more things for my car but I also want to try autocross soon and I don't want to be put in a class I'm not ready for.
I got the carbonmiata spyder grille which I doubt makes much of a difference but it's technically lighter and improves airflow.
I also got the roadstersport race exhaust. negligible hp gains but its lighter. I want to get the versus rear diffuser to compensate for the turbulence but I don't know if that would be an upgrade in SCCA's eyes. also thinking about the versus throttle pedal spacer.

Mine's not in storage for the winter I don't experience, though it is true I am not working on it (much) because I spent around $6k in just parts on it last year and would like a bit of a break from working on it for now. I put a set of paint matched OEM small tupperware on it that I found a good deal on but I am just enjoying driving it for now (especially given I'm balls deep into a clutch job on a different car of mine that isn't a Miata at the moment), not much to post about in /mg/ for me.

I've not really been driving my Miata 'cause of the shitty weather and problems it's developed lately. There's a leak coming from *somewhere* in the driver's foot well, the genuine Mazda clutch master I bought squeaks after warming up / pressing the pedal for a while, and the rear window still has two gaping holes that have only now just started to drip in water (I have no idea why these haven't leaked in all the years they've been there, but meh). My brother has had his Scirocco in the workshop for the past 3 weeks while he waits for a new starter to come in, and I can't work on anything outside because of the aforementioned weather, so I've been unable to make progress on *anything*.
I feel like I'm in purgatory... -_-

I got a new head unit for my NA but I got someone else to install it, which was a huge mistake because they broke some trim and screwed through the little cubby underneath the radio, with the spikey side of the screw facing towards me. A little surprise for me whenever I reach for my wallet :)
Lesson learned.

they're reliable and affordable sports cars. not as much power as other sports cars but can be more fun to drive. if you're a fag that prefers driving fast in a straight line then look elsewhere.
car guys will either look down on you or think you're based. most girls think they're cute, especially the NA generation with the pop-up headlights.
avoid ND1 miatas since they're prone to tranny failure. I think NC miatas are the cheapest. they're the fat ugly middle child that nobody likes but they don't look that bad in person and they're more spacious if you're tall or fat.

Things really don't seem to be going to plan, lately... Loaded my MX5 on my brother's trailer, and got roughly a mile or so up the road before I noticed smoke coming from one of the trailer wheels. After pulling over to inspect it, I can only assume that the rubber suspension inserts in the axle have given up the ghost, as the the wheel has flipped back on itself, in turn forcing the tyre into one of the floor supports and shredding a layer of rubber from the outer circumference. Fun!

Trick of the tint, I guess? Both sides are tinted with the same tint, but you're viewing the passenger side through the inside plus the soft top glass you're seeing it through is untinted as that actually voids the soft top warranty if you read the fine print.

Do it if you're comfortable with the idea that you might be stranded on the side of the road after you buy it because your car is overheating and the guy who sold it to you "forgot" to mention that, and your 20 minute test drive wasn't enough to get it to the point of overheating. I put together a pretty good solution for the lack of spare tire on the ND, at least on initial testing. I got one of the Moss Miata trunk racks and it seems like it should work, but it does sit just a little taller than I would have liked. With a factory 17" wheel, the center sits right above a cross bar on the rack, and a simple U-bolt spare tire mount from a farm supply store fits the bolt pattern well. I just need to get some stoppers so it can't scoot sideways, and I recommend putting the top down before opening the trunk, because it's heavy now and the tire would probably go through the back window if fully opened.
With the top down, the trunk still won't open all the way, but it will stay open on its own and there's enough space to fit a carry-on bag through, which is pretty much all of the usable trunk space. The rack has a 50 pound weight limit, and I purposely hit some bumps today to test that, and I see no deformation in the trunk lid. There are some scratches in the paint on the inside of the trunk opening from the rack clamps, and those only happened after driving with the weight of the wheel on it, so I'll need to put some film over those spots.
I'll drive it more on Saturday and put some top-down highway miles on it to make sure that there are no weird sounds or wind effects due to the spare wheel, and I'll have daylight available to take pictures.

It's not terrible, but it is obstructed. I can see under the rack and enough around the tire to know that I'm safe to change lanes between a shoulder check and the mirror, but I'm tempted to move the spare off to the driver side.
I drove it for a couple days with the wheel mounted, on normal roads, bumpy roads, highways, highways with 40+ mph winds, and washboard dirt roads, and I love it. The first thing people should know is that the clamp screws on the rack need threadlocker. Not only for security purposes, but it doesn't take a lot of uneven terrain to loosen them up, and only 1.5 miles on a rough dirt road jostled them loose. When they get loose, they start scratching paint and adding unnecessary noise to bumps.
On the highway, with the top down, under 75mph, the cabin seemed a bit quieter, but the wind would hit me in the back of the head in a way that's not normal. No complaints, it's just different. Above 80mph, the wind noise overwhelmed everything, which is the same as my experience without the rack/spare. My 150 mile trip today averaged 30.9 mpg, which is about normal for me, but keep in mind that there were 40+ MPH winds for half of this trip.

Here's a picture of the way I have the tire mounted. I used a few clamps from bicycle water bottle holders to act as stoppers, keeping the spare tire holder from moving sideways.

I'd be thinking of adding a cover for that tyre, like 4WD's often run.
I have a different type of rack for NA/NB by RS System. It pivots so you can open and close the top. Can't use it on the PitCrew though, as I filled over the frankenstein bolts.

>>28828413
I put film over those spots and it doesn't seem to be getting worse. Aside from those little scratches, I'm satisfied with the rack and it's a nice way to have a full size spare tire. I'll experiment more with moving the tire off to the side, and a carry-on bag might be able to fit and still make it under the 50 pound limit.

That's my plan, for security and for looks. I want to go with a plain gray cover to match the top, and because I have some gray kydex plastic that I'm going to turn into mudflaps. The fatter tires tend to spray mud across the side of the car and I don't care for that.

Most people stick to a 15", even when buying aftermarket wheels. There are examples of people using 16" wheels, and they will fit so long as you get the correct size tyre, but I think they look a little silly thanks to the "rubber band" look they have. Not sure why you're having trouble finding 15" tyres, they're extremely common and usually very cheap.

I was the biggest ricer back in the day. Have run all sizes from 17" to 13". The taller the wheel and lower profile the tyre, the less it likes bumps. Run 185 60R14 Dunlop on 6 1/2" now and they're great, but have a 15' set up in stock if required. I would never go bigger than 15" again.

Yes, but you also need the matching big nose (91.5+) oil pump and its o ring and gasket(90-93)/RTV (94-05), front main seal, timing cog, woodruff key, crank pulley and balancer, and crank pulley bolt. If you buy an oil pump (not harvesting it from a junk engine with the rest of these parts) I would recommend picking one for a VVT NB2 as they have the highest flow and fit big nose NA6.

No idea if it's the same for NC and ND Miatas, but I know NA and NB's have very short gear ratios, which makes 1st gear in particular exceptionally short. This likely results in you not getting very far before having to change gear, which isn't an issue if you're quick enough, but if you're new to manuals then I'll assume you're not changing gear very fast, and thus are spending a fair chunk of time coasting while you find the next gear. Now consider that everyone else around you is most likely in an auto, and all they need to do is jab a pedal and go.
Obviously this is just a guess as I'm not in the passenger seat with you, but as far as I can tell, this is the most likely reason.

>>28829632
I bought a suzuki sx4 a while back with low miles. There must have been a dealer in my area in the past, since they pop up for around $3k on marketplace/used dealers regularly. Manual transmission and a weird marketed AWD system that acts more like a 4x4. Great in the snow and fun enough to drive. No issues for me other than a rear diff seal that was easy to replace. Only downside is that the engine is crammed in there, so it'll be hard to replace the water pump when it goes.
>>
>>
>>
>>28831581
That advice isn't exactly wrong, but you'd be better off double clutching if you're worried about the syncros, rather than just waiting a few seconds with the clutch depressed. Slamming each gear home like you're in the Fast and Furious is obviously not a good idea, but you realistically don't need to worry too much, just change gear at a reasonable but relaxed pace and you'll be fine.
Just as an example, the speed at which this guy - https://youtu.be/VrcZ5IR3jtg?t=121 - is shifting is perfectly fine for regular driving.

Does anyone know the OEM manufacturer/part number of the downstream O2 sensor in the ND2 (2019+) Miata? Got a CEL suggesting I need to replace mine, the dealership quoted me an astronomical figure for the job and even the part alone is like $300.
From Mazda parts sites, the ND1 and ND2 O2 sensors have slightly different part numbers and it says the former is not compatible with my car. I've read on the forums that the ND1 O2 sensor is just a Denso part you can get from RockAuto for like 80 bucks. I can't confirm the source of the OEM part for the ND2 though.
The part number from Mazda is P518-18-861. RockAuto has a Walker one that is "OEM based" and while I like the sound of "based" I don't really know what that means. Any help on this would be based.
>>
>>28832323
I'd just slap the Walker in it. Walker is a supplier for OE parts for many manufacturers. I don't know if they're the supplier for the ND downstream O2 sensor specifically but they do make good stuff, and the actual OE sensor price is a joke.

I've always used regular (flooded) batteries with no problems (NA). Why do you claim that they suck?
>>
>>28838343
the "economy" flooded batteries you can get from autozone etc. are "maintenance free", which means that without modding them you can't top them off with distilled water, even tho the electrolyte solution will still evaporate. this shortens their lifespan, sometimes right after than 1 year warranty expires. whoda thunk. dunno if anyone still sells the ones with built-in refill ports
also, flooded batteries can leak acid, which fucking sucks. unfortunately my NB has corrosion in the battery area because of that. one of these days I'm going to get around to cleaning that up

The top is from Robbins. I really wanted a burgundy top but they stopped selling them online a few years ago, so I emailed them and they were happy to make me a burgundy fabric top as a one-off special order - talk about customer service!
I think it cost me about 1100, so it wasnt cheap, but it looks gorgeous and seems really high-quality - I am hoping it will last a very long time.
One thing to note - I went for the glass window (instead of plastic) for maximum longevity, but I only realised after taking delivery that the glass window makes raising/lowering the roof a bit more fiddly and requiring 2 hands. Its not a huge deal, but I like to drive with the top down as much as possible (and quickly yank it up with 1 hand when it starts raining) so in hindsight if i was buying again I would get the plastic rear window.
>>28844218
I totally agree. I am in rural England* and I actually think its the ideal weather for such a car - sunny in summer but not too cold or scorchingly hot - I have californian colleagues who say they almost never drive their miata topdown because its just too hot, which seems a real shame.
but in my case, I need at least one hot day to ease the fabric so I can actually raise and lower the roof - right now its stuck closed due to being a brand-new top
*the other big plus of being a bong is my Miat is an grey import RHD original Jap Eunos Roadster, totally unmodified and with all those little details like badging and carpets that the car nerds go nuts for

Mine was $1600 installed with new rain rails (I'll do a water pump and belts, but not a convertible top. No idea what brand but it's glass with defrost. Doesn't physically fit, at least on NB. You could get away with putting it on top of the trunk mat NA style, but then you'd lose trunk space when it's already at quite the premium.
>>

What if your battery mount rusted to shit and you removed it, and therefor you basically had no problems with putting a larger battery inside? Asking for a friend, etc etc.
Basically, outside of the physical size difference and post size, would there be any issues running a normal sized car battery in an NA Miata?

I'm finding ND1s for $12-15k, ND2s for $17-24k, and NC2s for $10k (found a 63k mile PRHT 2010 6MT for $9k but could have some big issue).
NC3s are retarded money and cost around $15k at which point I'd rather just get myself over a ND.
Are ND1s worth the money over a NC2? I won't do anything more than intake/exhaust, 200TW tires, and coilovers as a weekend/autox car.

I understand that this varies greately based on maintenance and use, but what kind of longterm reliability do NA Miatas have? I got ahold of one a while back that I thought would be a fun project, and it has 289k on the odometer. Its a '90 with the 1.6
>>
>>
>>28850108
My last NA got 300k miles before some chick ran into me. I redlined all day long, did burnouts at redlights on the way to work - not a "I did it occasionally" thing, I did it every day, for over a decade. And took it to tracks where I ran it WOT to redline every gear for 2-3 hours straight. I didn't even do the coolant reroute though I did have a nice radiator and fans.
The 1.6? I've never had one so I don't pay much attention, I do know there's a "shortnose crank" version that has problems.
It's an engine that was specifically designed to be turbocharged, without a turbo. It has to propel 2,200 lbs instead of 4,000 (this is a big factor in reliability). It's pretty damn reliable.
That said, I would not buy a 1.6 with so many miles, it's gonna need $5-10k in restoration and why not hold out for a 1.8? Still better than paying 3-10x as much for an FWD automatic crossover with surveillance on maccas.

I'm aware. I had a car that would do 170+ mph by the time I turned 18, and I was on prescribed amphetamine at the time. I've done some shit. Over twice my life later I appreciate a car that gives you control over one that makes you go fast but puts you at serious risk of death. The older you get, the more aware you are that the reaper is standing right behind you.
You can meme about it, but when you push the limits long enough you learn which cars do what you tell them to consistently.
I like stunt driving, not laptimes or top speeds, though I used to.
>>
>>28850114
Good to hear they're on the more robust side.
I bought it from a neighbor because I thought it would be fun to have a FR convertible roadster that I could go for drives in during the summertime. I've owned a vehicle with a sunroof before, but never a convertible. In terms of a project I thought it would be a good candidate partially because of its age and (relative to newer cars) simplicity and also partially because of the huge amount of aftermarket support that exists.
>>
>>28850127
It is exactly that. It's the perfect project car.
I got one at 19 and changed the water pump, belts, and cam seals with just a book and some beer.
Everything is right there, there's always room to fit a normal tool and your arms instead of needing some proprietary nig-rig method or tool. It's well-documented because so may people race them, anything you want is a google search away.
They're amazing, and as you said, there are still parts for them. Cheap parts. Restoring a miata is much cheaper than restoring an MR2 or camaro - and you actually can do it yourself.
>>
>>
>>28850099
>they're not performance cars
yes they are, they're more performance cars than 90% of the cars on the road that shit the bed when you actually start pushing them to the limit either mechanically or drivability. look at how many cars cook or starve their engines when you start to really push them for more than a few laps
i just want to know if the nd1 is worth it over a nc2
>>28850109

>>28850123
the fiesta will want to tip over as soon as you give it too much grip and comes open diff with a engine that likes to blow headgaskets >100k miles. they also fall the fuck apart (RUST even in warm states) and explode the rear strut towers with abuse/stiff springs.
>>28850114

>>
>>28850132
The tranny in the ND was designed for the 1.5 and really doesn't like the increased torque of the 2.0. Also some theories about failure rates going up when you have a LSD and sticky tires. ND1s (particularly the first couple years) have a high failure rate, and I don't think it's overblown at all. There's a reason for all of the TSBs and 4 revisions. Doesn't really matter how much you baby it, either, tho autox and track days will put more strain on it. ND2s and 3s have a dual mass flywheel and engine tune that mitigates most failures, but if you rag on it really hard or if you get very unlucky, 3rd gear's synchros go. 22s/23s apparently have more problems than other ND2/3s. A lot of people rebuild the tranny with the beefed up gearset from Walter or Mazda Motorsports, but that wasn't enough for the Global Cup cars, which get really robust sequential shift transmissions now
Anyhoo it's a common enough issue that I would avoid getting another ND1, not just because of it but also because the ND2 gets nice improvements to the engine. For a few thou more it's a no-brainer imo. But if you're dead set on the ND1 you do you

Probably not, unless you're choosing the ND1 with the 1.5. They are much cheaper than the 2.0 versions. My choice would be NC2-NC3 with the PRHT. NC has more room inside and less modern electronics.

if you come into an ND1 with extra cash, there are multiple NA and FI options to get more power out of it than a stock ND2/3. just be prepared to replace the tranny with one from an NC and take on a little extra weight as a result. still WAY lighter than an NC
>>
>>28850143
See, I did not know there were 4 revisions already. The difference ends up being closer to $5-8000. The cheapest ND1s are $12-15k and the cheapest ND2s are closer to $18-22k. Really out of all the NDs I've seen for sale I only saw one (a 2021 RF for $18k with 90k miles) that had the transmission changed out (from a ND3)
How is the 124 Spider then? I just don't like the engine, it seems like it hates to rev and even a 124 Abarth is about as quick as a ND1.
>>28850158
PRHT actually makes minimal difference in pricing. NC1s are $5-8k and NC2s are $10-14k. I'm in America anyways (East Coast). I hate how NC1s look so I'm avoiding them unless its the right color (I like white or bright silver) with a 2.5 swap. NC2/3 front/rear looks so much better.

The boot itself doesn't make *too* much of a difference to feel, that's usually down to the plastic bushing that the bottom of the shifter ball sits in; the boot does, however, stop quite a lot of heat from entering from the trans tunnel. >From what I understand you'd take that in for an MOT and end up with £10k in repair bills that you have to do to keep it registered.
Nah, MOT's are pretty easy to pass, assuming the car hasn't been sitting in a field for the last 10 years. It exists to make sure your car isn't wildly unsafe, so most failures are just because a bulb is out, or your tyres are nearly bald. It's nowhere near as strict as the German TUV or Japanese Shaken. People will act like MOT's are somehow responsible for taking perfectly good cars off the road, but generally speaking, it just filters out the worst of the worst. I had a 350z that was getting a little too close to "the point of no return" in terms of rust, pic rel, and it still passed with only a few advisories.

Make sure to do the whole kit, just the boots and oil might improve feel slightly (and help keep the oil in it) but the real improvement is in the bottom cup bushing and the big bushings with wave washers. Definitely some of the best money I've spent on mine, if you don't know for sure it's been done in the last 5-10 years order the parts right this second. You won't regret it. Good time to change the transmission and differential fluid too, while you're thinking about it. NA/NB takes 2.5 quarts of GL-4 in the transmission including the 5 speed turret, 2.0 for 6MT. (my personal recommendation is the Motorcraft XT-M5-QS "unicorn tears", well worth the cost for the shift quality) and 1 quart of GL-5 75w90 in the diff regardless of open/torsen, I use Redline there.

Yes, the NA/NB 5 speed, NC 5 and 6 speed, and Fiata all have a separate shifter turret that takes its own small amount of oil. It's far less picky about fluid quality than the transmission internals themselves, it mostly just needs to be clean and at the proper level.

I'm not going to make it.
I can't remember the feeling of the sun on my skin. The Sky is so gray and cold, but I remember it had another color once, When I would put the top down.

>what mods are essential for a miata?
None. You can enjoy them stock.
>>
>>
>>28852350
There are none. It's totally fine stock. If you do it depends on what you want and how you drive.
For me it's sway bars and an open intake. Intakes make them sound deeper, exhausts make them sound like bees in a can unless you cram 3 resonators in there.
>>
>>28850238
yeah, 4 revisions before they threw in the towel and went with the dual mass flywheel. they could have put the NC tranny in but I guess they didn't want people whining about the additional 21kg
the fiata engine is kind of a dog. you can make it more responsive with typical tarbo mods and a tune, but the multiair system is janky and doesn't like it when the car sits for too long. after a few weeks the oil will drain out of the top end of the engine and you have to prime the system, which can be a pain in the ass. not a problem if you drive it all the time but annoying. love how the fiata looks tho

Padded arm rest. First thing I noticed after buying my NA was that my elbow would ache on the hard plastic cubby lid, so I glued some thick foam to it and covered it with vinyl, and the result is as you see. You can just buy one of those pre-made stick on pads from Moss or whatever, but I think they look a bit naff, whereas this looks like the factory did it (providing you don't look under the lid, anyway).

the ND's stock exhaust is kind of boring but several aftermarket options sound fun.
a lot of people like myself dislike the stock grille so there's the carbonmiata or zunsport grille for a look more similar to the spyder nd concept car.
and if you have an ND you might want a throttle pedal spacer.
none of these are essential though.

my choice here. Been running it for a few years.
Deep and smooth. Get complements a lot for how good it sounds, especially since adding mid-pipe and header

I could be wrong but I thought that the true red (solid) was only available in the NC3, and the NC1 only had copper red mica. What makes me suspicious is that there is no pictures of the engine bay.

my boat is taking on water.
found the tail light gasket in stock on Bofiracing so can sort soon (only did them 3 years ago. only drivers side seems to be leaking though).
did the scuttle panel mount on passenger side last weekend as I had water coming in there as well. Will do the drivers side when I can be bothered (if it ever stops raining).

After 10 years of Sunday driving the clutch is on its way out. Its not slipping but the biting point is relatively high. What other things that can be changed "while in there"? Bearings are a thing, any seals that can be done?
>>
>>28856139
Assuming 5 speed NA/NB: Rear main seal and new RTV for its carrier, rear oil pan half moon seal, transmission input shaft seal and input shaft housing gasket (required for access to the seal), transmission output shaft seal, and of course the throwout bearing and pilot bearing that should come with your clutch kit. I'd recommend getting your flywheel resurfaced rather than a new lighter flywheel, especially if it's a daily driver not seeing any track time. Make sure to liberally grease the transmission snout surface the throwout bearing rides on and the contact points on the clutch fork where it touches the slave cylinder pushrod, throwout bearing, and the pivot ball, then very lightly grease the input shaft to clutch splines. You'll have to remove the shifter, so that would also be a good time to do a shifter rebuild as well if it hasn't been done, as new oil for the transmission and shifter turret. If you were thinking about a coolant reroute, having the transmission out of the way will make accessing the rear of the head much easier. Grab a little blue loctite for the driveshaft bolts if you don't already have any.

It's just another retard falling for clickbait.
Hell! I don't even know where to get real automotive news anymore. Everything is click bait, AI slop, unsubstantiated rumors, and complete fabrications.
These days if it's not an official press release I wont read it.

I would get a miata if the 86/gr86 didn't exist. But it does, so instead of buying a miata immediately I am saving up my money for a gr86. But that means in the mean time I have no sports car whatsoever :(
At least I have a Civic Si (our family car) I guess...

Mazda doesn't know what the fuck they want to do with the next gen Miata. They should just not sell it in the EU, as they won't be able to meet Euro 7 with anything worth a shit, let alone whatever cuckery is in store in the future
>>
>>28858074
Industry rumor is that Toyota and Mazda are collaborating for the next gen 86, so the next gen 86 will probably have dual branding similar to the toyota gr86/subaru brz does now. Instead we'll get a Toyota 86 (next gen) / Mazda Miata (next gen). The upshot is with their market share combined they may find it worthwhile to pass Euro 7 or whatever the hell it will be.

Oh not asking for help. Just strange. Few years back miataturbo and YouTubers were all about megasquirt.
I’ve been out of the loop and not paying attention to car stuff. Now I see on discord everyone hating on MS. Was just wondering if people here have experience with MS.
More likely to get a real answer anonymously vs on discord with everyone trying to farm react emojis and group think.

its on the high end of the scale for those cars. you can find a nc1 for that amount or even a high mileage nc2. $8k for a nb2 should be mint.
how do you fit in a nb2? if you're tall you might have issues
how rusty is it? nb2s tend to be rustier than usual for miatas

I bought an ms3 pnppro a few years back and it’s been sitting in a tub.
Worth selling it and getting a beer money ecu?
Originally I was piecing together parts for a diy turbo build. Might just get an FM kit for the simplicity/support and go standalone later.
Sell ms3 and the wideband /o2 sensor on marketplace?
