Which one do you like more? Which generation is your favorite? Don't you think these are the coolest JDMs other than maybe GTR?
Personally I'd like to have a gen 9 Evo.

Evo is a lot more high strung and agile
STIs are a bit more accessible but lack the edge
For me it's the angular Evo 7 with some upgrades from Evo 8 and 9 (mostly due to lack of parts kek)

Unfortunately
Over here in europe you have to go to specialised shops to get the AYC serviced fixed apparently
And they're so much worse on fuel than you'd expect
But in the 2000s and 2010s these were hero cars over here, punching well above their weight in magazine tests, endurance racing etc

It's a shame that both these cars ended up bending the knee to the 4 cylinder camaro on all seasons. They were so fast comparatively to everything else in the 90s and early 2000s. they just stagnated from there while everyone else continued to improve. now they're kinda jokes stock and everyone has to modify them if they want to compete with anything else. this leads to countless blown engines because their owner's egos are too fragile not to boost the shit out of them to keep up with some dude in a 4 cylinder pony car.

The Lancer Evo was always my favorite of the old JDM legends, shame any hope of ever owning one is long dead.
>>
Serving intervals (when Mitsubishi said every six months they meant it) being ignored and the requirement for every owner to run them at 500hp+ killed off most Evos. Imprezas were always better on the used market. Then the US being given access to Evos made them go up ten times in price
They’re interesting and raw and a good drive but if you use them for what most of the owners did, which is straight line 0-60 stuff, then you’re better off with something more modern

I've only owned Subarus my entire life but the Evo IX wagon has a special place in my heart. I will never be able to get one when they're legal to import though.

you can diy it pretty easily

the problem is the pump seizes up from rust/corrosion because it's right at the front of the car. installation is very easy just the pump is not available from mitsu anymore

As someone who owned a GD WRX Wagon, Evo IX, and VA STi
Evo:
Steering (excellent feel/quick ratio, you need a Spec C/2015+/RA quick rack to be comparable)
Horsepower/Durability/Potential (no need to go into depth)
Rear Suspension (rear multi-link vs trailing arm...the real reason they don't understeer as much)
Better diffs (1-6 vs. GC8 which was almost always open diff)
Better cooling system (will not overheat when abused as quickly and good to even 6-700+ whp on a std. radiator)
Its definitely a better performance car.
Subaru:
-Accessibility (Cheaper + More Common)
-Rustproofing/Bodywork (Evos rust out like crazy and the paint is worse...Subarus are way better in this aspect)
-Safety (Evos will kill you in a side impact)
-Nicer Interior (Auto Climate Control, Cruise Control, Fold Down Seats or Hatch)
-Better Brakes (Evo brakes are good, but STi are a tiny bit better)
-Shifter (Evo shifter is cable...Subaru is linkage and feels second to a Honda when its fresh).
-Transmissions on 6 speeds is way better. Evo 5 speed isn't terrible to its credit. Evo T-Case is horrible though and doesn't give you confidence launching the car.
-Softer Suspension w/more travel but understeers more from inferior rear suspension that wasn't really addressed until VA).
-Parts Availability/Aftermarket (WAY better than Evos especially when you deal with older cars. You can get 90% of parts for a GC8 STi domestically while its closer to 50% for a Evo 1-3).
-Engine Note (Evos sound generic/boring imo).
-Lighter if its a GC8
No matter what you do it seems like the EJ is happiest as a 300hp engine.

Forgot to add since post got too long:
I would not bother going past stock turbo with either car. The Evo is happiest under 500whp and the Subaru definitely under 350whp. I'd even argue you're better off leaving the Evo with a stock turbo and a cool 360-400whp. But a STi is good to 320-350whp with a stock turbo in comparison.

I saw one of those the other day at Aldi and I was surprised how good it looked in red (usually only see them in silver). If something happens to my Clio, I'll probably look towards one of those or a Honda of similar age.

>But a STi is good to 320-350whp with a stock turbo
Yeah, 320 is a good stopping point on US 2.5s. Just get a downpipe, catback, tune to 18-20 psi, and upgraded wastegate if you go with a catless downpipe. That's all you should do powerwise to a stock STi or it will suck every penny from you. "Oh, I just need to do this for a liiitle more power, but nasioc says I need to do this other thing for that to work and this other thing and...."
320 or so will put you in the 12s and these are 20 year old 4-cyl sedans.

Evo vs WRX is a great story of hard work vs talent. Evo was pushing an unremarkable FWD sedan platform to its limit, while WRX was made for performance first and then detuned for lower trims. In the end, Evo peaked and decided to go home and be a family man, while WRX is still kicking, although it got a bit fat with age.

>>28857432
>find a Lancer wagon and a crashed Evo locally, preferrably rear-ended or T-boned
>throw all the good bits into the wagon body
bam, ghetto Evo wagon
Would need to figure out rear widebody situation as it's a unique part, but you can always go aftermarket for that
>>
also why the fuck were regular Lancers so ugly
>>
>>28860798
The whole front end is different too, they don't even share the same wheelbase
Either you're going to join two cars in the middle, or, what seems like a more sensible move to me, you're grafting a wagon roof onto an Evo to achieve this

For me it's all those offshoots that are using Evo/STI drivelines or other variations
Most of are JDM tyte yo and collector's items at this point, I just keep coming across more and more of them and each time it's a neat twist on a familiar shitbox

I doubt that it's that extensive, even if the engine bay is different, everything from A-pillar and back should be the same, minus the widebody. Transplanting the entire front frame from a donor is something that's sometimes done with just crashed cars.
An imported front cut might be a viable way to do it. Tedious, labor-intensive, but nothing that's never been done.

the floorpan is different because the regular lancer did not have a rear diff or transfer case
whenever people tried making evo replicas in the 2000s out of mirages it usually involved somehow getting a whole evo floorpan for that reason, ditto firewall if you could not get a lhd steering rack and subframe and brake booster/master

evo xs are more accessable since i typically see them between 15-30k. its the 8s and 9s that are much more out of reach. i dont think the prices will be going down anytime soon either, theyre only getting older and rarer.
>>
It's hard to say. I had an STi for 6 years but haven't driven an Evo. I could do donuts in place on dry pavement, so it's not like the STi is that understeery. You could oversteer corners on pavement with the scandinavian flick even without the brake tap. The real benefit of the STi is the sound, it does something unconsciously to you. It's also quicker at the bottom-end so you notice power just driving to work. I understand the Evo to be slightly better in cornering but I haven't driven one so idk exactly what that means. My idea of good cornering might differ from someone else's. The big advantage the Evo has is modability; its engine will take more than an EJ257, but parts are much harder to get in current year for Evos.

The Evo VII is my favorite one(I know it's not really that popular but it was the one that I was playing in video games when I was younger so I have a nostalgic attachment to it.
But if I had the money and could buy one, I'd probably go for a VA STI because I'm just too busy to be concerned with keeping a 25 year old car running.

Evo 8 > any WRX ever to exist past, present or future. Subarus are crap. The boxer 4 is the dumbest engine configuration to use in a car, bar none.
>4 cylinders but two cylinder heads
>is a bitch to work on
>prone to stupid problems
EVO IS NO. 1

Cars were so fucking based in the 80s and 90s with all the crazy special editions you could buy. I know what the fuck happened, but also, what the fuck happened? I just love Japan's insane autism and massive R&D budgets during this time.
