I bought (picrel) this 2006 Subaru WRX STI used with 190,000km on the Odometer for Approx. $6k USD.
It's, up to date on the Shaken (that's the emissions inspection for you non-jap gaijin), has a low racing spec suspension (the stock suspension is included with deal), new tires, engine head gasket (the old one was just removed for preventive maint during an engine rebuild a year ago) and forged pistons. Everything else is stock.
I bought it because buying a car from other Japs is a PITA registration wise, and I needed a car because Japanese girls are super materialistic and will not date/fuck you unless you have a car/drive. Just kidding I need a car for getting around and taking the trains outside for work is for the unwashed plebs but the previous statement stands true.
The question is.. how badly did I get screwed on this purchase? Don't be gentle senpai.. ください。
Also any weebs here that "Made it" have a car in Japan? What was your experience like? Goonet purchaces, getting inspected, registration etc?

Not a nip but a Subarufag:
$6,000 is a good price. That's what the engine/trans sells for outside of Japan (in America/Europe, closer to $8,000 in parts once you include the spindles/rear end/brakes/seats). It should be due for a timing belt by now if it wasn't changed. It should be a very fun car.
Otherwise check for rust, front strut towers, under the car in the fender arches, and remove the trunk seal (trunk lip). Spare tire well too if it had a leak at the tail lights and trunk. If you want to prevent any issues do the standard Subaru bulletproofing bits (radiator if its yellowed/brown, cylinder #4 cooling mod, IAG AOS or Radium Catch Can Setup, IAG pickup/baffle kit/oil pan).

Also I don't think its a STi, you have the standard 4/2 WRX brakes. Unless for some reason they were swapped its probbly just a WRX with a STi grill for some reason. So if its a real STi (DCCD, 6 speed) then its a good price. If its a WRX its only a "okay" price if not a little on the high side. Engine is different by 50hp (230hp vs 280hp) and the transmission/rear/brakes are different.

The timing belt was changed, forgot to mention. I didn't do that deep of an inspection with the seals or the baffles. Now I'm afraid to look.

The radiator is easy (if it looks any color other than black it should be changed)
Next to the strut tower there's a VIN plate that will tell you what the car actually is.
Trunk seal is easy just peel it up and check. Ditto fenders, I think its a WRX, I remember those STis had fender flares.

in country side you get a lot of weird looks/side eye. The plates also give you away.

Cars only sell at all in Japan to the same few buyers because they're forced to consoom due to regulations that make it nearly impossible to own an even moderately old vehicle.
a car with 50k miles on it and only a few years old gets tossed and a new one is purchased. A good chunk of Japan doesn't even have a driver's license.

Is it a manual? If so, doesn't seem terrible.
You could've gotten a GC8 RA for $5k though at auction...
>>28857966
this is good bait.
> they're forced to consoom due to regulations that make it nearly impossible to own an even moderately old vehicle.
this isn't true at all. You just have to stay up-to-date on basic maintenance and then the shaken inspection itself is just a hassle of 1 day off work or a few hundred dollars to pay someone to do it for you. Owning an older car only costs you like an extra $50/year (up to maybe an extra $100/year for higher displacement engines). Once cars get 10-20 years old and start having bushings fail and suspension components fail then it gets more expensive, but again, this is all just basic maintenance and those cars are heavily discounted.

>$5k GC8 RA
impossible in 2026 as someone who has been actively searching. maybe pre-COVID. the $5k GC8s are rusted out v3/v4 STis with 200k+ miles or automatic WRXs (maybe a okayish high mile WRX).
GC8 STi RA is closer to $17-25k especially if its a v5/v6. Even STi v5/v6 is like $12-20k depending on color/spec/rust.

on the flipside the motors are cheap and will probably exist for the next 20 years

they still buy a huge chunk of cars and there's a lot you cannot experience in japan without a car even as a tourist. again, there's a reason places like japan have 4.5 million new car sales last year. 388k in netherlands. 2.86 million in germany.
there are 81 million drivers licensed in japan and 110 million adults. you're wrong.

You can discern a legit hawkeye STi because they have integrated second spoilers just behind the roof. I had an '06, they've all got them.

I had a leased car in the country side. I live in Tokyo now and bought a used luxury vehicle on carsensor. 2 year warranty that covers everything so I've already replaced the heater hose, ac pipe and engine cover gasket. I've driven it so much though I'm already very familiar with the highway. It's no longer a mystery. It's also xbox huge so when I'm driving in the neighborhood I'm just praying no cars come. You know that whole deal with two large cars, pedestrians on bikes and gakusei all about.

I literally just saw one sell for $5k like 2 months ago. There was another one on YAJ or jmty recently as well iirc. Go on auction sites, not goo-net/carsensor.
>t. they weren't pristine, had repair history etc I think, but looked fine. Clean ones are definitely expensive

You're gay, but also it was less than 2.5M¥
I'm curious about what awd coupe is $10k though, that would be cool. I have a rwd coupe already.
Cars are so cheap in japan if you go out to a dealer in the sticks.
>>
>>28858506
Ah, I meant the evo sedan. Evo X's with the DCT/automatic are only $10k right now.
You could get one of these coupes:
https://www.goo-net.com/usedcar/spread/goo/13/700050865430250701002.ht ml
I've also seen GTOs go for $10k and those are all AWD here.
>>
>>28858527
That would be an option, but I refuse to drive an auto fun car. I would just get a delica or something. The auto wagons are something like 150万円 too mind you. (with a shit engine though)
I also personally dislike sedans and the evo x in particular, so the CT9W was the perfect choice. It has the better MVEC 4G63 and it weighs about 20ish kg more than the sedan with way more space. I can fit my skis in it easily.
Plus the sedan 9 cost more than the wagons here, it's not popular with young guys I guess.

Could be nothing, but go on jmty and you can find cars too with patience. Also the auction houses have good selections, you can get an account online usually through a broker if you call them up.

For example

Decent price and you can get to Hachioji from every line pretty much.

Sadly not a manual, I'm going to save up for a new WRX STI that will be my fun car in weebland.
Unironical glowie and since I don't have a PR or Work visa buying a car from Jap national in my current status is a MASSIVE pita. Doing a ZOGbot to ZOGbot sale is far easier title wise.
>>28858458
I mean I have a 2020 forester state side, I've always been a Subaru only guy because it was a car that generally was affordable for me and practical even the sporty cars.

it's a big thing just to have a car, much less a full-size sedan when it comes to dating young people. I don't get the arrogance here that you get from say, Californians, who always want to try one-upping you or something. All the guys are typically excited, or at least pretend to act excited, when you talk car stuff.
Girls just want something comfy and clean where they can get fucked in.

Is there something about Okinawa that makes it a place to avoid? Or is it filled with picrel? I thought it was beautiful.

>tons of american zogbots
>locals are like a mix between chinks & japs

it's a lot like hawaii.
