My understanding is the front suspension is slightly different, and obviously the engine differences that even BMW lovers say is noticable because of the 800rpm difference and general powerband difference. Are these a nightmare to modify, or can I put an ebay turbo on and go faster than M cars?

The newer Z4s have gotten WIIIIIIIIIIDE but the early ones are little bigger than a Z3.
The problem isn't the size but the fact they're tuned to drive like an Accord while the Z3 and Miata are fun.
A Z4 sDrive35i is some fun in the straight but it does not beg you to find 100% in a corner like a Z3, 330i ZHP, or 996 does.
