are 3 cylinder engines just planned obsolescence?

they are unstable by design

Given that build quality is more important, the only things you can really talk about when comparing engine configs is the space they occupy and the engine harmonics. You are correct, an I3 is less balanced than an I4 so it requires more dampening / balancing which in turn makes the engine have to work slightly (imperceptibly) harder to accelerate at the same rate.

There are plenty of Yamaha CP3 motors out there pushing 200k km no problem. I don't think anyone has actually worn one out yet desu. People who let the CCT fail and ignore it don't count.
Despite inline 3s being "unbalanced" they are great little motors when competently engineered.

Found the retard.
Engineer my butthole because three clyinder slop is shit.
You cannot balance it, by design.
You cannot balance it, by the physics of math.
You can get pretty close, but compared to a V4 the V3 is shit on evert front.
More expensive repairs
More intense labor
I bet it's a fucking nightmare setting up the timing for it
You will have a proprietary counter balance setup in order the V3 not to rattle itself to death
You'll spend more money on injectors because who the fuck doesn't sell them in pairs
I dread Hondas V3 because it's going to be equally as shitty.
The V3 is a marketing gimmick to win on Sunday. Sell to a sucker on Monday. I bet it's gonna sound like dogshit too even with an aftermarket exhaust.
I have gimmick fatigue, the bug people that push these delusional mechanical choices deserves to face the wall.

>Oh I was only pretending to be retarded.
V3s and V4s are so exceedingly rare that most enthusiasts will never lay eyes on one. I don't even know the harmonic balance of those; they basically don't exist.

6 is an even number. It has to do with the firing order and how it balances itself out.
Purely theoretical: In an I6 if piston 2 and 5 fire at the same time it's more balanced than an I5 where 2 and 5 fire at the same time. If it's an odd number of cylinders no firing order will balance it.

A few problems surrounding the G16E.
First is the absolute garbage oil it ships with for muh fuel economy and emissions. Anyone who drives the car hard on that oil is asking for problems.
Second, the direct injectors when given high load at low rpm overspray then the fuel mixes with oil and creates risk of detonatation making engine go bang.
But that second issue was a problem only for the first gen engines and has been fixed since.

That depends on things like bore, stroke, and materials. That's exactly what I'm talking about - people tend to add variables and suddenly the scope of the problem is much larger.
Only ask what happens when you change engine config.

V2 and i4 are balanced. I3 is trash and is not.

No I wasn't pretending to be retarded, I was day drinking. Gobbless.

As one of the people you replied to, yeah sure, I started drinking within 5 minutes of waking up today and have has 10x 9%s, so basically 18 budweisers at this point but I'm still drinking. I still would never call an I4 a V4.

I've only had one vehicle with a 3 banger and it was a kei car (Suzuki Mighty Boy) that I owned when I lived in Japan. It gave me no problems for the two years I owned it and it was very, very used already.

For me it’s the humble v5. The ACTUAL v5, that is.

Not bad. Sounds like a car I4 mated with a tractor's.
