How much do I have to divulge to a dealership when trading in?
The math is about to work out on trading my Frontier in and I'm tempted to do it because the gas milage is terrible and has gotten worse and I don't trust it to live until it's completely paid off without needing major work. I'm sure if I told them that they'd offer me less for it.

whatever you can get away with not telling them. they're definitely going to try to fuck over whoever buys it, so don't feel bad for doing it to them. let their inspection catch what it's going to catch, play dumb if you can, and walk away.

You should always be totally honest and volunteer as much information as possible.
Boomer running the dealership is pillar of our Economy and lying to him would be a sin.
Obviously he will try to maximize the price when selling it to the next sucker but that's just good business practice.
You can always just pull yourself up by your bootstraps, take on another shift and will be able to cover the difference in no time.

You don't legally have to disclose anything, and the dealership will likely have something baked into the contract that the deal is contingent on certain aspects of the trade-in holding up, so they can void it and reverse the deal if they find out it's a complete turd.
If it seems like a "high-trust society" dealership with everything upfront and no selling you on a monthly payment or scam addons, the White thing to do would be to disclose the problem. If it's not something like a sticking brake or something that a bottle of Seafoam in the crank fixes, you're right in that it's probably major work, and it's a scummy thing to do to try to make your problem somebody else's.

check your o2s, spark plugs, and primary cats in that order. 12.5mpg is what i get on my r51 pathfinder
85k miles tells me its due for a tuneup (primary o2s, spark plugs, clean the maf)
worst they get at that mileage youre gonna have come up are valve covers (leaks oil), radiator, and cam/crank sensors ($300 for all 3 from nissan and takes 30 mins to change, only buy the part from the dealer even the hitachi is good for 3 years + too many fakes online)

You don't have to divulge anything, but be ready to be lowballed. If the dealership paid fair prices, everyone would sell their car to the dealer instead of dealing with memebook markeplace people trying to trade you a dirt bike + $200 for your used car.
So YOUR math might be mathing, but expect the dealer to "suddenly" find something that devalues your trade by 1-2K, it doesn't mater what the thing is, they'll find a dent and tell you it's gonna cost $1500 to fix it, therefore that will be taken out of your trade value if you accept.
