the 70s was the era of boroque auto design. they were trying to project a 1920s vibe, updated to the 1970s. no different than modern cars adding 'retro' styling elements like the black nose stripe on the current Ferraris.

Yes. Live in a remote part of Australia. Saw a Mercury ute at a car show once and took a pic. It's a small sample size I know, but, hey!
