are they as reliable as the 3rd and 4th gen models? i consistently see older models with 250,000+ mileage. will the new 2.0 liter Lithium-ion system outlive the older 1.8 liter Nickel-Metal Hydride battery system?

Nobody knows. That is the risk with buying new, you might be the first or second victim of some sort of catastrophic failure, Nissan CTV style, or Hyundai exploding engine style.

Toyota will obviously tell you they're better, improved, better fuel economy, better technology, better batteries, etc. but at the end of the day all manufacturers engage in cost cutting, swap a cable here and there with something that is just a bit less reliable but saves you half the costs, and in the long run that means tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions back in the pocket of Toyota for the whole generation, while you get fucked by "cablegate"

If you want one, but are hesistant due to this problem, your only recourse is to wait it out, see what happens in a couple of years.

Why would you buy a Prius when the Camry is now a hybrid by default?

Yeah they're like the same price for the base models and the Camry doesn't use expensive bicycle tires that nobody stocks.

They've been using the lithium batteries for like a decade now, that's not unique to the new generation.

Thats what the extended warranty is for!

some people want smaller cars. Crazy, I know

they have much higher compression and about twice the horsepower of the previous gen, there's got to be some compromises made there

There's a low chance the new style battery will randomly ignite. It's pretty low, but it's there.

Time will tell, but if you're not ready to veer towards something newer, just get the goofy looking 4th gen and enjoy not paying for gas.

And for the truly frugal, the Corolla hybrid is basically a 4th gen Prius without any of the Prius look. Peak appliance.
