i know this is another "freedom to, freedom from" argument but surely randomly placed privately owned cameras in the woods gives much fewer benefits than the issues they cause right? the only hunting ive done is rabbits via slingshot though so maybe i dont see all the utility to a trail cam
can anyone here post some reasons why youd put them up? all they would tell you is that there was a deer in the area 2 days ago right?

I've yet to hear of an actual problem from them, just schizoid /in/cels who get upset at the idea a camera exists somewhere, mind you I've never used one, but this feels like the usual /out/ maladaptive daydreamer butthurt over things like trekking poles and car camping.

You're delusional if you think people are setting up cameras to watch you shit in the woods.
Like how would anyone even do something like that?
>This is the perfect spot to shit, someone will shit here within days I just know it!
Fucking nut job, I'd tell you to go outside but i think society is safer if you stay inside.

Kind of related.
An elderly friend called.me.one morning. A deer had got hungup.in their fence and sudoku'd itself. I went out and loaded it into my truck and decided to drop it down in my forest with a trail cam just to see what would nibble on it.
Had some possums at first.
Then a bobcat.
Then a coyote.
Then it got dragged deeper into the forest out of camera view and I missed a couple days before I checked and moved the camera to it (crappy camera didnt even catch who moved it, I think it was Bigfoot).
Then one night the coyote showed up and about 5 minutes later the bobcat came along.
I've got some cool pics with the bobcat with his ears back and hair on his spine raised and the coyote is slinking away with its head down and tail between it's legs.
So if anybody has ever wondered what the hierarchy in the forest is, its Cat>Dog.

Rather than damage the camera itself, it would be better and probably easier and cheaper to just put something in front of the lens so that the camera is rendered useless. Eventually someone will retrieve the camera and clear the obstruction, but you make it annoying enough for them to have second thoughts.
Or you could just poop on them. Have some canned beans for lunch and then cover the lens with a steamy loaf.

>63 national parks and they're worth nothing.
National Parks =/= Bureau of Land Management.
Hunting is only allowed in a fraction of National Parks- and those are highly regulated and usually part of a specific population control program thats dependent on current conditions and permits are only issued through a lottery system.
National Preserves have highly regulated hunting systems.
Yellowstone National Park is 1/4 the size of Switzerland.
Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve in Alaska is 25% larger than Switzerland.

>I'll make sure to steal the next one I see.
you haven't stolen the 4 I've already put in your house yet, so I find that doubtful.
also, eat less garbage and actually go outside more, it's depressing watching you.

youre missing the point, they dont have to do it specifically to target you, and you dont have to be paranoid to dislike the idea of the potential uses of these cameras.
say theres a guy with too much time on their hand, they spend a months wage on a bunch of cameras and install them in the woods nearby.
now every time you walk through these woods nearby theres a solid chance that asshole has footage of you and you can do jack shit about that what hes doing with it.
yes i know most people who buy these cams dont have those intentions but its still creepy.
not usually being looked at by homo sapiens used to be a great perk of the forests

You were recorded on 50 cameras before you got to the trailhead.
Chances are the majority of those cameras were government/blm tracking population densities of local fauna or park service collecting data of trail usage.
Guess what- supreme court already ruled you dont have a right to privacy IN PUBLIC. Dont like it? Buy your own forest.

That's just it. I know they're watching for fauna.
I DON'T know that the local creepy boomer is only looking for fauna. In fact, it's more likely that he'd put up a cameras in high traffic spots just so he can go "heh look at that guy.." on his laptop monitor like a creep rather than just be looking for deer.
Ive heard of trail cams being pointed towards campsites before too. Only CREEPS put up trailcams on land that they don't EXPLICITLY OWN.

So a random guy has footage of you walking through a forest and....?
Do you hear yourself or do words just fall out of your head?

To be clear, any land management agency tracking visitor use does not use any kind of camera, they use counters that either use a laser that people walk in front of or detect vehicle vibrations. No photo or video.
Now law enforcement does use cameras though, but mostly to grab license plates
