Always bring a secondary in bear country.
Preferably a hand cannon

gross, especially considering smith has 460S&W (which can also fire 45 colt), and considering the .45 handgun bore has a wider selection of bullets for handloading

What kind of bears? What kind of rifle?

.45 is a worse round in all counts. It's got like a century on the .44. My shotgun fires both and I only keep that tube because of the tiny little .410s for around the house.

very low chance of the rifle itself failing, they are made to be carried outdoors. make sure you know the ammo works well in your gun and is suitable for bears
you need to have a ton of practice though because being attacked by a bear will 100x your bad habits and you don't want to not fully cycle it, drop the magazine, get it hung up on clothes, etc. you also will not have as much time to draw your gun as you likely imagine.

i can't ask the bears if they are feeling lucky unless i have a .44

Why would you even respond to him? Hes posting a frog 15 years after frogs. And he doesn't know how to walk.

Congratulations on discovering why þe olde tyme dangerous game hunters preferred double rifles.

your first gun is your secondary defence. your first defence is common sense.
Old bolt actions, double barrel shotguns (even tripple barrels, 2 shotgun 1 rifle) and revolvers rarely malfuntion.
Its a reason big game hunters and their so called stopping rifles used in aftica and parts of asia are double barrel big calibre, you can only hope to fire two shots from the time you see a beast running at you so they make each of thoose two rounds capable of stopping and droppin it dead right there and they use a dead simple two barrel design that doesnt jam or fail.

Also why (among other reasons) the remington 870 is the gun of choice for biologists and conservation officers who work in remote bear country
simple to operate, can sit in the bottom of a boat for a month and still work, and if a 12 ga rifled slug at 40 feet can't stop a bear you're probably fucked anyways
