I'll give you the full truth, winters are quite bleak. There's 8 months of wonderful, sunny, crisp weather, everything blooms, pretty flowers everywhere, green forests, then there's 4 months of miserable greyness.

On a good year when there's plenty of snow, it feels like living in a Christmas postcard, but half of the time it's not cold enough for snow and the temperature hovers right above 0, so it's just grey and rainy.

Plenty of thermal springs around though, chilling in the hot pools is the only thing that keeps the winter blues at bay.

Yeah the woods here are oak heavy. There are like 30 species of oak here. S. Live Oak predominates, but it is just such a chore to split. It does burn long and hot though. Alot of Post Oak and Laurel Oak also.

Pecan and Hickory burn well, Pecan just makes alot of ashes. S. Red Oak burns well, White Oak is a bit less common here but burns very well also. I have had a good experience with Maple though. Splits clean and easy and burns clean it just doesnt burn super hot. Ash grows here, but it isnt super common Ive never burned any.

Loblolly used to be the planted pine tree of choice for timber stands. Then it went to slash pine for the last few decades. That's why those two volunteer up everywhere. You know what I do with the Chinaberries? I plant the native wisteria around the bottom of it (not the Asian one) and then I train it to grow up around the main stem and take the tree over.

Eventually the wisteria takes over and the chinaberry dies and pieces itself down. And you end up with a tree shaped wisteria vine that if you cut it correctly will hold itself up.

it was cloudy so its kind of grey. This is maybe 1500ft from shore, in front of my house.
We got this place for way less than the median price here. lot of work, i usually spend my days running my business from 5am to noon then after that im outside cutting lumber, replacing things, landscaping, etc. its not just the prices: if youre not involved with tuna fishing, spear fishing, dont have kids, etc, then youre not going to have a good time here. If youre a parent like me, go fishing, help neighbors, assist the community and get involved, and like going to church, then it's a great time.
Fun fact: this portion of our island is almost entirely owned by mormons. they're good neighbors i guess but way too pushy to get you to join their church. fuck that!
