It is possible. There are private spaces on the internet where access to Pegasus type software is leased out (at exorbitant prices) to more or less anyone with appropriate compensation available.

It's unlikely, but if someone has the technical know how and has access to the right kinds and level of compensation, it is entirely possible someone could take over your device, and start pretending to be you. Pegasus can be easily detected once you're looking for it, but i'd imagine the attacker would probably just wipe your device afterwards; they'd have no reason not to.

This does not mean that every pissed off chud can autohack any device they want, but it *does* mean there is a non-0 chance that you could be the target of an operation like this, and I wouldn't bank on the local cops sorting that mess out, were it to be the case. As I understand it, the "but i got hacked" defense is routinely dismissed as wishful thinking by authorities, (mostly because they lack the technical knowledge to investigate) and they're far more interested in just nailing you to a wall than they are.

This being said, Apple has countermeasures in place to alert a user to a possible Pegasus-type attack, so Apple is at-least trying but I think there's better private version which have been modded that bypass that, but I don't know for sure.
